I was just reading about this recently Sammies. It's truly disgusting. And far reaching. Many American politicians have been involved in this kind of manipulation. The right wing power machine is positively frightening. Imagine what the christians would do if they had carte blanche.

Too Much Religion Leads to High Teen Pregnancy Rates

Is this a surprise to anybody? The following was posted on rhrealitycheck.org Thursday:

U.S. states whose residents have more conservative religious beliefs on average tend to have higher rates of teenagers giving birth, according to a new study forthcoming in the journal Reproductive Health.

It's not surprising to me, because most of those "religious" states are also so-called red states. Generalizations are always dangerous, but lack of education, low or no income, and increased religiosity tend to intertwine and build on each other. Take one of the most egregious examples known.

It's been widely reported that Middle Eastern terrorists talk suicide bombers into committing murder by explaining to them that they will be heroes in heaven, their after-life reward will be that they are treated like kings and have all the advantages that elude them here on earth. These promises are believed by people with no money, no education, and nothing to hold onto but their religious beliefs.

One other, possibly more interesting development released in this new study is that the children of teen mothers are more likely to have mental health issues:

The children of teen mothers have been reported to have higher rates of several unfavorable mental health outcomes. Past research suggests several possible mechanisms for an association between religiosity and teen birth rate in communities.

That is not as widely known as is the relationship between religiosity and unwed pregnancy. It is an unfortunate development.

I must say, however, that I have long questioned why it is that "abstinence only" sex education proponents were able to win billions of dollars in federal support in this day and age. Yes, much of that came from President George W. Bush. But it actually started with President Bill Clinton, and continues today (at lower levels) with President Barack Obama. Can you imagine what would happen if liberals pushed for "complete, biologically accurate sex education only"? America's right would go apoplectic.

(shrugs)...oh well. It's kind of like climate change and the effect on countries with little water....seems people don't care if babies die of thirst as long as they're born....boggles the minds of caring, compassionate and concerned people.....sammieswife.

Hmmm... I see an opportunity here! Lots of legislation is introduced for the sake of "protecting children"... e.g., Drug Free Zones and Gun Free Zones, etc...

I propose we introduce "Religion Free Zones" for the sake of protecting children from the harmful effects of religion, such as higher teen pregnancy rates.

We must ban religion to save the children!!!

There are a lot of stats out there that reflect the increase in teen pregnancy in those states that are are more religious and that decrease funding for sex ed and birth control in favour of abstinence only programs...within the USA.

Now, the most interesting of all this, is the whining and bitching from people who absolutely hate welfare programs and harp on single parents or the leeches of society, many arising out of poverty and a cycle of babies at 13 without education, but who fully support abstinence only programs and removal of access to birth control for teens primarily for religious reasons - which are a known cause for a percentage of all those welfare cases.

Yes, Sammie, everyone should be on welfare. The ills of the country started they day Boosh stole the election. Our education system is failing because our children are too stupid to go to the store and buy condoms. We must make a law that every one must always have two condoms on them at all times. That will cure the problem without any Federal spending. It is also a jobs program because the condom makers will have to hire more help. Win-win for everyone!

As a matter of care and concern for black babies, I am with you! As I said, I am now anti-birth.
