Idols (not the ones you're thinking of)

Why do people idolize other people such as the 'famous' in film, music or sports or even in 'the congregation'?

Why do people 'look up' to or 'look down' on other people?

I thought the Bible teaches that we are all equal!

People want folks to look up to whether they deserve it or not

  • IMHO

But why do they want folks to look up to?

They want an example to follow. They look to people who are famous & liked as examples to follow so that they themselves may be liked. Idols are often imitated, & the imitation is an attempt to become more popular.

I have never understood the appeal of famous people to otherwise mature adults. Outside of the celebrities' profession (films, sports, whatever), they're just people, probably more flawed than most because of the massive adulation they receive.

On the other hand, I think children need people to look up to besides their parents and teachers. A brilliant, talented "idol" can motivate a child to choose a career they might otherwise have not considered.

Because of children, I think famous people do have a responsibility to behave themselves. It's too bad that most don't give a rat's ass about the effect they have on children.

creativhoney: unless you're Johnny Depp. he deserves worship.

Only when he acts. I'm willing to bet that in his everyday life, he's anything but Captain Jack Sparrow.

IMHO, the bible does not teach equality. Hebrews could own slaves as Exodus 21:2-6 shows. Luke 17:7-9 shows Jesus attitude towards slaves and his disciples were even worse (1 Timothy 6:1,2; 1 Peter 2:18-20 New International Version).

I stand corrected I was confusing what the Bible says with what the Watchtower says - see below:

Well they're only famous because they're on TV or movies. These are people that studios place in front of us and it's a type of pedastal. Here, one man or woman can be seen by millions of people, but the guy or girl up the street? I don't know them, who cares? That's the mentality.
