    I'd nominate Norman Borlaug - He was a man that wasn't just talk. He didn't leave his mark on the world from the comfort of an armchair.

    He worked hard in miserable places for 50 years to improve agriculture yields for people he didn't even know - and his work made a real difference for billions of people.

    The question is impossible to answer. Everyone is standing on the shoulders of those that came before. The men that wrote the constitution drew upon the ideas of Enlightenment philosophers. Issac Newton built on the observational astronomy of those like Galileo and Copernicus. Paul needed a Jesus, Jesus arrived amidst the Jewish understanding of who he was. Etc.
