JD, I'll bet you have health insurance, don't you ? I'll also bet you feel confident (like he did) that your job is safe ? Permanent ? You're fairly healthy and don't think you'll ever have one of these life 'sea-changes' ? You'll never have the dreaded 'pre-existing condition' curse ?
Did I get anything right ?

I have health insurance, that might as well not be there. It covers very little. I have a part time dead end job that is not safe. I am not healthy, having suffered all my life from numerous problematic and expensive health conditions. I've already went through two major life course changes because of health. I have a pre existing condition, and am very familiar with the "curse."

All of which is irrelevant to the discussion.

No other 1st world country does that to their citizens. It's unconscionable that joining the Army would be the only solution. The added stress & strain could hasten this lady's death, then, what happens to the 15 year old ? What will become this family ?

No other first world country balances state government with federal government. You're comparing apples to oranges. And don't forget, we lead the world in medical advances and cutting edge treatments. That is not by accident.

Switzerland, and to a lesser extent Germany.

Well, I am very surprised and saddened by your situation. But, that's why I asked, instead of assuming too much.

The thing is...your situation is ENTIRELY relevant in my opinion to the whole discussion. It sounds like you and I and millions of others are one serious illness away from bankruptcy or worse -- a slow death because no one will treat you without 'cash-up-front', because of our current health care system.

If these other countries can do it, so can we ! They get more bang for their dollars and are healthier than we are...the last time I checked the US was in 37th place in the world. So what ...if we make all this new medical equipment and procedures, if millions of us will never benefit from it.

Stories like this remind me of the realities of life. My Uncle who carried me through the death of my Mom is scheduled for 8 weeks of radiation therapy. He was a pillar for me.

Not everything can be handed to everone on a silver platter.

I'm not even sure why you, or any of your like minded 'friends', keeps spewing that nonsense in regards to a man and healthcare. Many of us are willing to pay a fair share of taxes to ensure that the poor don't have to fight to save a country - and only do so because they have no other way to get healthcare. How grand! Called a hero if he dies while in the US military - called a communist/socialist pig if he simply asks for a change in government that would help him afford the cost of healthcare. So he joins to get healthcare, he dies it's okay - his wife dies it's okay - his kids end up on welfare and they become labelled sloths. Geez....ain't it grand?

I'm one of the fortunate ones who's gotten to a point where I can provide acceptable insurance for me and my family. But, it wasn't so long ago that I was working a dead end restaurant job whose employee insurance plan wouldn've guaranteed that there would be no more of my hourly salary left to pay for living expenses.

Opting in that insuance plan would've left me working for the restaurant for free.

I remember the $120 doctors visits to quacks only interested in how many pills they could push on you. Of paying hundreds of dollars for prescriptions that now I can get a 90 day supply for $10. Of making agonizing choices on what I would do if something catastrophic happened.

I don't think anyoneout there is looking for a "silver spoon" as you put it. Just a fighting chance to provide the same quality care the leadership of this country enjoys without worrying that the costs would bankrupt and devastate.

This country seems to have no problem finding trillions of dollars to spend circling the globe engaging in perpetual police actions that do little to protect its citizens.
