Real Reasons Some Go to Bethel

I've known known a lot of Bethelites and it never ceased to amaze me when asked why they wanted to go there the kind of answers I got. Some included:

My mom used to have dinner ready for me every night when when I was pioneering before I got married. When I got married I got tired of having to cook dinner every night and pioneer. So my husband and I applied to Bethel.

The circuit overseer's wife told me that going to Bethel would be a way for my husband to be able to serve Jehovah full-time and I should be supportive. I agreed to do it for one year only.

The weather (snow and rain) makes it difficult to get my time in pioneering...I knew Bethel would allow me to serve Jehovah full-time uninterrupted (sounds good but now I realize she just didn't like to get wet or cold). This same person admitted to me to praying for a change in assignment - and according to her Jehovah answered her prayer - she went from a mundane menial labor to an office job.

some guys do it out of guilt for being a bit bad or disappointing their folks.........some do it cause they are tired of spanking their own monkey and it is a great place to scope...........oompa

My older brother went to Bethel because my parents axed the idea of him going to college. He graduated in the top 10 of his class, loved physics and was being pursued by several universities. However, both of my college educated parents - turned jw culties knew higher education would only lead to his "spiritual deterioration". God, they were so wise! Shortly after returning home from Bethel my bro, then 24, opted to marry a 16 y/o jw sister. (Good thing she was home schooled and had graduated at 15.) Unfortunately, the marriage only lasted a three years due to my bro's rampant pornography addiction. Guess he picked up some great coping skills at Bethel....

Marlene- this is a whole other thing I'll never understand, how can college educated parents refused such an education for their own children? It makes no sense. It makes even less sense that he could marry someone so young...

Now, now, guberningbody - there are plently of Bethelites who are in no way gay. Some really are under the illusion that they are in God's House - extra protection when the big A strikes.

I went to Bethel for several good reasons (e.g. because I wanted to serve my God), but also because it was a way to escape my family and home. I'm not so sure that latter reason was all that bad--some people get married for the same reason, or fall into destructive activities.
