When a Knight would raise the visor on his helmet..
Theoretically,a Knight had nothing to fear in the presence of a lady.. He would lift his visor or remove his helmet entirely,as a show of trust and a tribute to her femininty.
Even when headwear was no longer used to protect a man from anything more than a downpour,removing the hat was still considered a gentlemanly way of showing respect to another person..

has nothing to do with whether or not the person believes in God or is ethical
or not. The female equivalent could be any customary greeting, that's all. It
wouldn't have to be a curtsy.
