Satan is evil only when evil is narrowed down to laws in a holy script. Satan's evolution in the bible from a resister or some type of angel to God's arch enemy, occurred with the Zoroastrian influence of Persia about a distinction between good and bad forces, to good and bad deities opposed to each other.

I do not believe that Satan is the enemy, nor do I believe God is our Friend. As I see it, God was starting to establish a tyranny--it starts with one rule (no deciding for yourself what is good and bad), which sets the stage for other, more repressive rules in the future. If one cannot decide what is good or bad, that sets the stage for the ruler to exploit the situation.

Satan saw this situation at the earliest stage, and stepped in. His job was to guard mankind, and he did a much better job than he was expected. He saw the tyranny before it had a chance to get off the ground, and attempted to put a stop to it. Of course, God did not tolerate this--so He promptly debased Satan and sentenced humans to die. All because God would not put up with anyone escaping His tyranny.

As I see it, a being that cared that much about humans that he would go above and beyond his duty to protect them, even from God Himself, is not going to be influencing people to mess up the world so much. Why set mankind free from one tyranny only to let another one develop? That would have rendered Satan's work in Eden a wasted effort.
