Standing in the bread line...

Where I live, there are a few cats outside that like to come over and eat. We put cat food out on the front porch for the tame ones, and for the wild and wild-ish cats, I go off the porch and put cat food out on the sidewalk and under the wifes' pickup truck - which doesn't get driven that much.

The cats know where to come - to get a meal. We even make sure that there is water available - as animals need water.

About a month or two back - I also started putting out bread for the birds. I guess it started off before that as a sporadic thing - on occasion I would bring home biscuits or tortillas from eating out - and piece them up - and scatter them out onto the road in front of the house. The birds have 'food radar' and usually within 5 minutes of any food appearing - they're right there - and hopping on the ground - getting the bits of bread.

Recently, I was putting bread out in the road, and a stray cat (grey and white spotted) - one of the wild-ish ones - saw the bread, and was curious as to what was being 'thrown away'. He came over, and stooped down to inspect it. "Wow! You're throwing away perfectly good bread?!?" was his look as he started eating the bread bits that were in front of him.

Meanwhile, the small sparrows had landed... and were interested in eating... only... there was this large CAT! eating their food! I could tell that this tiny sparrow was upset - as he kept hopping closer - but not close enough to be in range of this belligerent cat that wouldn't leave - AND was eating their food!

The cat was oblivious to the bird - as he was going from pile to pile of bread bits - greedily eating the fabulously tasting bread! He couldn't get over his own LUCK! finding this wondrous food! (I've never seen a cat go on so over just bread. It was just the whole wheat bread that you get at the store... the cheapest I can get, too.)

Well... I'm not sure how that turned out - as I had to leave - and both the cat and the birds scattered as I drove off. However, I know that it wasn't just a fluke. That cat is crazy! A few days later, I was throwing out bread for the birds, and he saw - from afar - that I was throwing out more of that wonderful bread - and came running - literally - and into the middle of the street to start feasting on the bread bits. (Silly cat!)

Oh. The birds also thank me for the bread bits. How? They sit in the tree above my car - and poop on it. Thanks a lot birds!

lol! Cats are crazy! Around where I live there are stray cats and dogs as well as free roaming chickens. When people toss out their old rice or other left overs, it doesn't take long for the chickens to come a running. Down the street I've seen a couple of iguanas that also like old cooked rice.

I have mangos falling on the roof of my apartment. The other day my landlady said she saw a monkey eating one of those mangos. The monkeys are not native to the island, but escaped from a research station that no longer exists. I've seen them on occasion, but they are normally quite elusive.

I used to have two cats. One ate his bit and left sometimes leaving food in his bowl to come back for later

Ha! You'd think that after 10 years he would know that if he left anything in his bowl the other cat would come and take it. As it was we had to stand there and wait for Sierra to leave so Siki didn't push him away from his bowl. Siki would be sitting at his bowl wolfing down his food with a constant eye on the other cat so he could grab his food. For 10 years we had to hold him back so Sierra could eat.

Some cats just want what others have. It doesn't matter that they have their own and have enough. Siki would eat until he threw up and then go back for more - one more reason we had to sit and watch him. More than once he got up in the cupboard, opened the door, pushed cans aside and pawed a bag of Meow Mix out of the cupboard and chewed through the bag to get what he wanted.

I suspect your poacher is one of these cats. Too dumb to realize the bird might be a tastier treat so he just steals as much as he can from others

    Great story, Jim.

We have 2 cats who have completely different cat-analities. They are about the same size and weight and are only fed outside once a day. Baby is black and white like a little Holstien cow and her tail curls over her back. She is so aggressive when getting her bowl of food she often knocks it of my hand before I can put it down. Cricket is a siamese mix, tawney coat with a beautiful ring tail. She is so polite and dainty she will rub my leg even after I have put her food down and then she will calmly eat some and leave some. We have to stand nearby to keep a big grey neighbor cat from running her off her bowl.

I had a cat about 20 years ago who would attack our food and us. If we had food in our mouths, she would claw at our mouths to get the food inside. It was so funny. She was just a kitten when she'd climb us and attack like that. She was a serious hunter

My first cat loved cantaloupe. He would drag rinds out of the garbage to lick the orange clean off.

My current cat loves fortune cookies.

Note that most dry cat food contains grains.

Having tried the cats kibble, I would say that stale bread has more flavor. My wife made me stop because I kept trying to lick my ass and climb trees.

    You guys are hilarious.

I just think that this cat is real goofy. Some cats are. Cats have personalities...

I used to own an orange tomcat with a target on his side. Very pretty cat. He was a nice cat, too. I named him Tom (yeah... not very original - but it fit him well.)

I also had a younger female cat named Spot (after the Mr. Bill Show.)

Anyway, I was single back then... a bachelor. I had no furniture, and the floor was my table. I would get home from work, let Tom in, and open my tin of sardines and eat them with crackers. Tom was such a good cat. He really wanted the sardine 'juice' that I had... it smelled wonderous to him. He would start to come over to me - sitting on the floor eating... and I would sternly say, "No Tom!" and he would dejectedly turn away and actually go to the furthest corner in the living room and sit with his back to me.

After I finished eating, I would call him, "Okay Tom - come and get it." and he would come into the kitchen and lick up all of the sardine juices in the bottom of the tin.

I got the kind of sardines that had a chili pepper in it - as the pepper gave the sardines a good flavor - and a sorta kick. Tom would eat all around the pepper - leaving it alone. After he was finished, I would open the door and let Spot in - who would usually be waiting just outside. She would come running in - skid to a stop - and litterally gobble down the chili pepper - whilst Tom sat cleaning himself. He would look at her - and you could almost see him shaking his head at her eating the hot chili pepper.

I miss that cat. He was a good companion.
