  I'm wondering how the flint axe was dated.

  • The stone itself cannot tell you when it was carved. (Only when the stone was formed... millions of years)
  • A wooden handle can only be carbon dated to < 60,000 years. Beyond that carbon dating becomes useless.
  • Just because an artifact is found next to something else (the mammoths) does not mean they directly related.

  Does anyone have more information about how it was dated?

  There is a small carving on one corner. Made in China, 400,000 BC.

  But seriously, the technological culture evident from the fashioning of artifact gives a general idea as to the age if there are other known examples dating from the period and region. The axe in question is probably extremely crude in it's fashioning, indicating that it is from the lower paleolithic.
