I've always washed my cast iron with soap and water after each use, then rubbed it down with oil. Now I'm reading that this isn't proper and you're supposed to just rinse it off after use. Not using soap seems unsanitary to me. Thoughts?

What you can do is put water in it and heat it up on the stove-top again... heat it up and scrub the water around with a scrubber-on-a-stick, then toss the water and oil ick and rinse again with clean water.

After use, I just wipe my skillet with a little oil and store it in my cabinets.

Of course, I try to keep vermin and varmints at bay!

    Tee hee hee.

PS A cast iron skillet is a good deterrent to over-arching males.

If it is well-seasoned soap and water won't hurt it. Don't let it soak, re-season occasionally, dry it well (heat on the stove).

A good deterrent to non steel-toed-shoe-wearers too.

Hi JD. I'm a real cast iron fan and I can tell you from experience that you've heard right. I rinse off my cast iron pots, wipe them down really good and hard with a clean towel then warm them and lightly oil - if they need it. If you use soap you just strip the iron of it's 'seasoning'.

Chinese people treat their steel woks the same way and will even shun restaurants that are known to wash their woks!

Old, blackened cast iron, you can't beat it mate.

I used to work in a plant, so I'm sure I have some steel-toed shoes around here somewhere.

I'm like you John, I've always used soap and water but I've been told not to as well.

Now I rinse it off and wipe it off with a dishcloth that's been in soapy water and then rinse again. That way I feel like I've washed it (even if it's just in my head) but I don't think it's hurting the seasoning.
