I remember this episode of Gomer Pyle USMC from when I was a kid. Talk about play acting out of character. Great voice.

Anybody have any other instances they would like to share of an actor stepping out of character in a role?

One of my favorite John Wayne movies - El Dorado (1966 or 1967) - has him and Robert Mitchum playing a couple of fellas that wind up using one crutch and limping about.

At one point - Robert Mitchum's character informs John Wayne's character that he is putting the crutch under the wrong arm.

John Wayne retorts in his drawl, "Well, YOU're one to talk... YOU've been changing arms all evening!" - or somesuch.

It's surprising - and hilarious that they left that 'blooper' in the movie - but I feel that it adds charm and wit to the overall theme. (It also shows that they were using a 'prop' that they weren't all that comfortable with.)

    Regards,

Gomer Pyle USMC was the last TV program I saw before boarding a bus with a bunch of other recruits to go the airport and fly to Marine Corps boot camp in San Diego in 1970.

I've always loved his singing. It was just such a difference to his speaking voice even when he wasn't playing Gomer Pyle

Ed Ames who played Mingo in Daniel Boone (TV series) had a fabulous voice and was a singer and part of the Ames Brothers long before he got into acting. Interestingly he wasn't an American Indian. His parents were Russian Jewish immigrants. After doing TV and movies for a while He returned to singing and had a career making several hit records

George Clooney singing in O Brother Where are Thou? was hilarious

Meryl Streep and Pierce Brosnan singing in Mamma Mia was quite the surprise. It was noted in something about the movie that she never sang in movies but I have an earlier movie of hers where she did sing - and quite well too

Richard Gere In Chicago was impressive

Except that wasn't George Clooney singing. The actual singer that Clooney was lip-synching to was Dan Tyminski, a renowned bluegrass artist. What did make Clooney's bit funny was his antics on stage.

Tim Blake Nelson (Delmar) did sing his parts and the black singer/hitchhiker, Tommy Johnson ( a take-off on Robert Johnson) was played by a real blues artist, Chris Thomas King.

I'll give you Meryl Streep, but Pierce Brosnan? It was just painful.

I'm a big fan of the movie and bluegrass music. I've had friends get hooked on bluegrass and mountain music after seeing that movie.

Since 1972, Jim Nabors has sung "Back Home in Indiana" at the Indy 500, only missing 7 years. This song is a big Indy tradition with Nabors being the favorite to sing. I went to the 500 in '71, the year before he started singing.
