Fresh or Frozen?

Frozen vegetables are usually frozen within hours of being picked, thus have a lot of nutritional value. Once vegetables are picked, they start to lose nutritional value quickly. Most "fresh" produce in stores has been picked at a minimum a week before, usually more.

So I love the fresh vegetables that I grow myself and that I buy from our local CSA. At the grocery, I tend to buy frozen. Except that on Sundays I generally make a big pot of vegetable soup to last all week for lunches and I buy a turnip every week to go in that. This year I'm going to try growing my own turnips.

I also buy carrots and celery every week at the grocery. With meals, I tend to buy frozen green beans, frozen peas, frozen broccoli, etc. I do buy canned tomatoes for soup. But if I can get a good deal on tomatoes this year, I'll can my own.

Have you all tried the Steamfresh vegetables that cook in the microwave? They taste really fresh.

Yes, I've gotten those before, they're good.

Here in lies to irony of vegetables:

    • Frozen vegetables contain more nutrients... yet frozen vegetables are not very appealing to eat
    • Fresh vegetables contain fewer nutrients... yet fresh vegetables are the most appealing in texture and taste.

I guess it is better to eat fresh vegetables and get fewer nutrients then to eat NO vegetables at all!

Re: the steamfresh microwavable veggies~I'm afraid to cook anything in plastic. Don't those cook in the plastic bag? Are you sure that's safe?
