My (favorite)Uncle(Bud) was shot eight times at almost point blank range by the Pennsylvania Highway patrol officers.

He is my uncle from my fathers side there were four brothers alive when I was young, and ever single one seem to be fearless.
They did pretty much as they pleased and got away with alot. None of them to my recollection seem to fear death(at least never showed it).
I remember picking out buckshot from my father's hand that my uncle Bud(as we called him his real name was the same as my grandfather Elmer).

My uncle Roger was in the rodeo and was also a blacksmith. One time he lassoed my cousin and myself when he was drunk and gave us rope burns around our neck. When my father found out he started beating the shit out of him and my uncle Calvin stopped him.
My father spent 2 years in reform school when he was young for beating someone almost to death. My father could be dangereous. He was young when he went to reform school so it was not kept on his record, in fact he latter went in the army and became a sargent and was offered a job as a police man and turned it down because he won't catter to the rich in town.

My favorite uncle Bud loved Guns and always had them around. He was DF once and at the time of his being shot he was not DF'd even though no longer living by JW standards. My father tells me the story of....

Want more of a true story as I lived it and what other of the family told me.

My father told me this story after his brother Bud died(67 yrs old).
There was alway something that each brother had against the other, but non the less, they still had this weird kind of respect for one another.
I felt very little fear of my uncles in fact felt inspired by their lack of fear.
My father did frighten me when I was small, but as I got bigger my fear faded. Once I almost shot my father when he, and I got in a terrible fight when I was only 17.
I was sound asleep and we grabed me and lifted me up against the wall, I didn't know what was going on and started pushing him around. When I realized what I was doing I stopped, and then he started beating me when I stopped pushing him. I just couldn't hit him because he was my father who I loved.

I was so upset, that I went in my bedroom unlocked my gun cabinet took out my 30 odd 6(30 caliber 1906) automatic and loaded the clip full of bullets.
My dad heard this and did not come in my room because he knew what I would do.
I say this with some sadness because it is true. I finally felt so bad that I would even shot my own father that I unloaded the gun and locked it back in the cabinet.
Don't get me wrong I really loved my father, but I couldn't take any undeserved crap from him.

Anyway he tells me this story about my uncle Bud after he died and it went like this.....(guns)

    D. W.,

I am with you. As Paul Harvey says, I would like to hear, "the rest of the story."

By the way, were they of the annointed? Sorry, I know that was a cheap shot... no harm intended.

    Larc,
I will try to tell it, it's not that easy, but it helps me to try and remember these things. As I tell the story more things come to mind maybe that's good maybe it's bad I don't know?

I will probably say more in the morning.
I was not born a JW and my father never became one, only studied.
My uncle Bud became a JW through me. One of his sons is still an elder in New Hampshire.

My father told me soon after his brother Bud(Elmer) was gunned down by the police that a few years back(about 4 or 5), that Bud and him went on a little trip to go see their sister in law Alice who lived in Colorado, they both lived in Connecticut.
They(uncle and father) both have drinking problems and wife problems.
My father shot his second wife in the leg and my uncle was accused by his present wife of trying to burn the house down with her and her mother in it.
My uncle had a camper van so they decided on this trip to Colorado. Driving while drinking was something my father did regularly, and seldom did he ever get in an accident and my uncle was the same way.

Anyway they are running out of money to buy booze and gas, so Bud says to my father lets rob some of these truckers at the rest stop, they had 2 hand guns with them(.357 and .44 magnum).

My father says he didn't want to do it. So Bud pulls one of the guns on my father and says: "I say lets rob them".
My father picks up the revolver laying on the seat next to him pushes it in my uncles face, pulls back the hammer and says: "I SAY LETS NOT DO IT".
Bud then proceeded to lower his gun and my father lowered his, it was a stand off.
My father then proceeded to unload both guns and throw away all the bullets he could find when ever Bud wasn't looking.

As I said my father told me about this stand off with his brother shortly after he was shot up.

My uncle Bud was in the airforce near the end of world war 2 and was stationed in Egypt. He felt God must of had a special purpose for him, because he got called away from his (Company), I guess you call it that, and when he returned, I think he said the whole company was slaughtered and only he survived because he wasn't their when all the fighting broke out. And so because of this he would always tell me that God must have a special purpose for him.
While in Egypt he fell in love with a greek woman who we called Hellen, she live in some greek settlement there, she was very educated, had a rich brother, and spoke several languages.
My uncle wanted her so bad he lied to her and said he had lots of land and money in the USA.
She fell for the lie and married him, well when they came to the USA she soon found out the truth. This was his first of a number of wives this marriage lasted about 20 years and produced 2 boys and one girl.
Latter he became the sheriff of New Milford and since he was about 10 years older than my father my father lived with them for a while when still a teenager.

Next the shoot out with the Police.

As I mention Bud was the sheriff of New Milford, Connecticut this was more than forty years ago.
He use to tell me stories of him Jacking(poaching) deer, and how the game warden would always be trying to catch him.
Even his son my cousin who is a elder in the Concord, New Hampshire area told me of how his father and him(while an elder) were poaching deer and the close call they had when they almost got caught.
He said he really didn't want to do it but his father talked him into it.
Ann, Buds last wife was a real nice generous person. When I was in Bethel I witnessed to them and also JWs at Ann work would talk to her.
That's how they both became JWs(1976). Soon other family members like his son Michael and her daughter Debby became JWs.
I used to stay at their house when on vacation from Bethel.
One time they took me for a ride and showed me some very nice places and told me some secrets that I don't think they even told Michael one was this:
They (Ann & Bud) showed me a nice house out in the country they burglerized and how they rented a Uhaul truck and took all kinds of nice furniture and valubles. They were quite proud of themselves when telling me the story(they weren't JWs at the time they committed the burglury). And me I thought that's cool, I did things like that before becoming a JW too.

Anyway lets get right to the incident. In a little while that is.

My Uncle Bud was kind to people despite maybe a few flaws like every single one of us have.
When I was at Bethel he gave me a car for about the last 4 months I was there, for that I must be grateful.
He had very good mechanical skills, could read people with great skill. I even think he knew me much better than I knew myself. He was calm all the time I ever seen him, and he never ever treated me bad, ever.
He was a calm person who would let nobody tell him what he could, or couldn't do.
I think his death, was a suicide by Policeman.
I know some of my relatives who loved him would probable find my conclusion wrong and some would agree with me.

Well it's about 1989? May and I'm headind home from a long driving trip in a 1971 Ford truck that someone gave to me to fix and keep.
This driving trip lasted about 3 weeks from Connecticut to Arizona, Mexico, California, Wyoming, and many other states and finally back home to Connecticut.
I helped my my step daughter and her husband move their belongings to Tuba, Arizona they move their to serve where the need was great for JWs, it was right on the indian reservation and there was a very small double wide trailor for a kingdom hall right on the reservation, mainly Hopie and Navaho. One of the elders was Sue indian but he got DF'd.
My 18 year old rusted truck pulled their car and I built a little camper on the truck that was way over loaded with their belongings.
The truck made it thru this trip and many more trips.
My plan was since the truck cost me nothing that if it broke down and I couldn't fix it cheaply that I would just leave it on the side of the road somewhere and rent a car or uhaul truck for the rest of the trip.

Well while comming home and going thru Pennsylvania the fog was so thick you could see maybe 10 or 20 feet ahead of you. You had to keep you eyes on the painted lines that's the only way to be able to drive in that weather.
If you ever driven in that type of fog for a couple of hours going 25 miles per hour max, you know how fatigued you can get, my wife was really mad at me for pushing myself to keep on driving, and had stop talking to me, she was giving me the silent treatment. So it was a very depressing ride home those last few days.
I'd say it was just about 2 or 3 am in the morning and I'm the only one awake. So I turn on the radio for some company, and I hear this announcement about a man that was shot on the Pennsylvania turnpike by the state police, the announcer gave it the slant of police brutality.
And then they gave the discription of the man and his name.
They said he has 67 years old and his name was Elmer Wiltshire.
Being 2 or 3 am and the fact that I was totally exausted I wounder if I heard it right?
Any way since I was driving I lost the station,(signal) and figured that it was just a coincidence that this person had the same name as my uncle.
I think I made it home on thursday between about 7 or 9 am.
As soon as I got home I went to sleep till about 2pm that afernoon.
Since I was an elder I was at the meeting that very same day and my mother came up to me before the meeting started and told me my uncle had been shot near Scranton, Penn. and they didn't think he was going to live much longer, and that his sons, and daughter where there in Scranton staying at a Mcdonld's halfway house near the hospital where there father was.

    DW,

How long were you a JW? How long an elder? What caused you to leave the JWs? Just curious.
