Heath Ledger was brilliant. And I say that irrespective of what happened to him after filming. Subtle nuances in acting caught perfectly a schizophrenic psychopath, and his ability to deliver simple lines with absolute perfect comedic timing was fantastic.
The Dark Knight was a very good comic book film, with plot holes as all of them do but lots of fun like a good roller coaster. But Ledger is deserving not just of a nomination of winning the bloody award.

Heath was totally amazing - just chiming in with the chorus.
Oscar? He deserves one. He left this planet while on top of his game. His performance was perfect.

Good question. First thought is supporting, since Christian Bale is the lead. This Joker didn't get near the screen time that Nicholson did in the '89 Batman, so upon reflection I stick with Supporting Actor. If that's his draw he should be able to win it.
