Is it rude to not include "Gifts are not necessary" on a b-day invitation?

It feels off to me to include any mention whatsoever of gifts, to have them or not to have them.

    I fully agree.

Guess I need to find funner people (read: more compatible with me) to hang out with.

Sounds like you've outgrown this friend (and maybe others, too). That's not necessarily a bad thing and the friend was probably the right person back when you met but not now.

Yeah, the up'ity attitude that comes across in "No gifts, please" just sounds so stuck up.

Then to inform someone that to not include such stuffiness would be quite tacky indeed is just, well...geez, we aren't the super rich snobs.

She sure acts like it, though.

If you don't care, don't put it in the invite at all. You and they are grown up, and people can bring gifts or not.
