Charles Russell was many things in his life.

    1.Clothing chain magnate

    2.Presbyterian

    3.Congregationalist

    4.Adventist

    5.Opportunist

    6.Pastor

    7. Mouthpiece of god

When Russell sold the clothing stores for enough cash to finance his passion for religious zealotry he began a strange journey.

It seems that Charles was the equivalent of a modern day conspiracy geek. There are people who devote themselves to fringe interests such as UFO's, Elvis sightings, Bigfoot, Loch Ness monster, crop circles, etc. Charles Taze Russell was that kind of guy. Except, RICH!

He was looking for a hook to hang his hat on. He chased down a lot of lectures and leads and read everything he could lay hands on.

When he discovered Adventism his eyes must have lit up.

He had found something he could really pour his fortune and genius into and make it a life's work.

By compiling a large body of Adventist ideas together, Russell had convinced himself that Jesus Christ had really already come back. He arrived at this conclusion one year after it was purported to have happened.

    1874
    - According to Russell's theology Christ returned invisibly (2nd Presence). He actually "discovered" this in 1875.

The "invisible Jesus" idea fired his imagination! How could he turn this into some action where his business acumen and writing skills could be of use?

    1879
    - Russell publishes "Zion's Watch Tower and Herald of Christ's Presence" magazine. This is the predecessor to their present magazine.

Russell pulled together everything that gave him goose bumps and distilled it into a particular viewpoint that would dazzle other Adventists (as people who were looking for proof that Jesus' 2nd Advent was upon them).

He began publishing his viewpoint to the tune of 6,000 issues a month.

By 1880, bible students from 7 different states(East Coast to Ohio) were tuned in to Russell's writings because they were not only eclectic, but, had the strength of a singular view magnified by urgency of rhetoric. Russell connected the dots for people and made it simple.

There was a "buzz" about what he was doing. He was becoming high profile. His next step would be to actually form a formal Society for these peculiar religious views so as to differentiate himself for the background noise of other crackpots and End-of-the-world nutjobs.

    1881
    - Zion's Watch Tower Tract Society formed.

Was Russell's intention to start a new religion? Absolutely not! Russell was a dabbler in strange ideas who wanted to create a business which dealt with religious novelties. Russell did not even like religious organization nor did he wish to be the leader of any religious sect.

He described his view when he made out his will:

"Zion’s Watch Tower Society is not a ‘religious society’ in the ordinary meaning of the term; for it has no creed or confession of Faith. It is purely a business association, whose mission is to serve in a business manner the wishes of its beneficiaries, who are represented in its officers"

The question remains: was Russell sincere, honest and pious--or, was he a fraud and a shyster?

What would be the easiest way to determine his ethical sensibility?

Let's examine his integrity as regards what is perhaps the most novel of all Russell's quirky fascinations: PYRAMIDOLOGY.

So, when did businessman Charles Russell morph into preacher, guru, mouthpiece and religious icon Pastor Russell?

We can gauge this by the effect of all this fame and worship on his marriage and partner Maria Russell!

    1896

    - Maria, his wife, reverses stance on Matthew 24:45-47. Russell is no longer the "faithful and wise servant." He is now the "evil servant" of later verses.

    1903

    - Maria files for legal separation.

What happened? Apparently, Charles started pushing Maria's influence aside and choking off her access to the Watchtower for her views, ideas, doctrines and interpretive advice.

He began paying attention to other women too. Maria and Russell had never had sex to consummate their marriage as man and wife due to some Victorian repulsion this virginal man had toward physical intimacy. Yet, he could be found behind close doors fondling ladies other than Maria!

A bomb went off, of sorts. Things started to escalate downhill for Pastor Russell in his marriage, business and date-setting.

The REAL WORLD intruded on his fantasies big time!

Russell threw himself whole-heartedly into his Business cum religion. Attracted to him were men of ambition and talent.

    1906

    - Rutherford gives self "wholeheartedly to the movement."

    1908

    - Property acquired in Brooklyn, New York, future headquarters of the Society.

-purchase old Henry Ward Beecher home and church, Plymouth Bethel.

    -building renamed Brooklyn Tabernacle.

Lawsuits, religious opposition, jealousy, rumors and such mounted up heading for a true confrontation in the marked year of 1914.

Everything hung on Russell's date and predictions: business, credibility, religious certainty.

What did Russell actually predict would happen in 1914?

Pastor Russell predicted the END of religion, government and mankind's domination of the Earth.

Russell painted himself into a tight corner with statements as absolute and confident as he could use.

The date of the close of that 'battle' is definitely marked in Scripture as October, 1914. It is already in progress, its beginning dating from October, 1874.
    Zion's Watch Tower, 15 January 1892, page 1355
We see no reason for changing the figures--nor could we change them if we would. They are, we believe, God's dates, not ours. But bear in mind that the end of 1914 is not the date for the beginning, but for the end of the time of trouble.Zion's Watch Tower, 15 July 1894, page 1677
The Scriptures show that the second presence [of the Lord] was due in 1874 . . . . This proof shows that the Lord has been present since 1874.
--The Watch Tower, 1 March 1923, page 67
Surely there is not the slightest room for doubt in the mind of a truly consecrated child of God that the Lord Jesus is present and has been since 1874.
--The Watch Tower, 1 January 1924, page 5

By predicting the END (Armageddon) and not the beginning of the pang's of distress, Russell had no wiggle room at all!

Would Pastor Russell follow in the footsteps of the honestly deluded William Miller of Great Disappointment fame?

    1845:
Miller admits his mistake: "That I have been mistaken in the time, I freely confess; and I have no desire to defend my course any further than I have been actuated by pure motives, and it has resulted in God's glory. My mistakes and errors God, I trust, will forgive."

Instead, Russell begins to change things here and there and to waffle, flip-flop and DELIBERATELY LIE.

This is clearly the case in his subsequent reprints of his Great Pyramid measurements!

Although Professor Smyth did "a pretty careful examination" of the MS, "word by word" and "thorough", he just did not realize that the dimensions Russell was using were incorrect. After-all, Russell’s figure (pre-1905) was 3416 inches, and the true measurement was 3461 - a reversal of the last two numbers.

Professor Smyth was sent an advance copy with the correct figures. Russell altered them later.

Professor Smyth was never sent an advance copy and had no knowledge of his research being used in such a manner. Russell made the whole thing up.

For the next 2 years Russell set to work making changes, amendments in his reprints and covering his tracks while his faithful following stood with their collective mouths open in astonishment.

How could the mouthpiece of god be so wrong?

Adventists under William Miller had responded by inventing more and more excuses for the Great Disappointment. After Russell's death, the Watchtower Society followed in the Adventist's pattern by careful revisionist OMISSIONS and deliberate misrepresentations of what Russell was and what he had intended to teach.

A religion that teaches lies cannot be true."

Methinks Russell has been reincarnted into JCanon... their writing style is incredibly similar.

I never knew that Russell taught about "Pyramid inches" , an inch for a year. The inch and English system of measurement weren't even invented when the Bible was written (correct me if I'm wrong!).

People can be persuaded to believe almost anything, and Russell knew it. What a huckster.

I think you've presented it well Terry, one thing that could also thrown into Russell character profile is his salesman

persona, intellectual dishonesty was one of your comments also , I'd like to add to that intellectual weakness.

Someone mention previously narcissistic egotist, I think he could fit into those shoes as well.

Did he realize near the end of his life, by what he wrote in his will, in that no further publications should be published,

that he was regrettably wrong in his ideologies and perhaps carried a bit of guilt with him ?

Or was he just a shrewed callous businessman with a white collar around his neck looking only after his own self serving interests ?

Some salesmen think they have the innate capability to sell just about anything , including God.

He didn't want to be upstaged!

It was okay to recycle his own glib gleanings, however.

DO alot of JW's miss the following point?

THE WATCHTOWER SOCIETY BEGAN TEACHING THAT THE RESURRECTED RUSSELL was directing the continued publications FROM HEAVEN!!

In other words, Russell became like a Catholic patron saint! He was the virgin Mary for Bible Students.

What happens to the direction of Jesus Christ from his already established Kingdom? I guess Jesus was waiting for his chief lieutenant, Charlie Russell, to show up and help him run the work correctly!

    Very interesting thread.

    This is killing some lurkers.

I doubt 10% of Jehovah's Witnesses possess a scintilla of inerest or curiousity about the history of their precious religion.

Of the 10% who do, I'd be shocked if any of them experience a moment's discomfort at the character, personality and ideology of the founders.

Maybe 1`% who possess intellectual honesty will stop, blink and begin thinking hard about the logical connection between Russell, Rutherford and False prophecy.

It is this 1 person out of 100 I am writing for here on JWD!

Few others have the time to read such bloated threads chock-full-o'nuts as they are.

I try to keep it simple and I invariably fail.
