Like Avi, I'm familier with him from Missing Persons - isn't his brother on guitar? - which was probably a bit constrained a form for his talent to shine. Still he did inject personality there!
The best rock drummer you probably never heard of

Tony Oxley, without doubt one of the best drummers both within and without rock and jazz. Here he is in rather restrained jazz format, but you can hear enough to tell that this is a major player and extraordinary musician. There are very few drummers who have made records of nothing but drumming and which held one mesmerized, but Oxley did this forty years ago.

Another drummer who must never be forgotten, Pip Pyle. Pip was an electrifying player (he died a few months ago) and in the trade he and Bruford were always short-listed as the two to use. I think Pip had the edge on Bill Bruford (they hosted a two drum band together at one stage!) as he spent as many years in jazz as he did in rock and this cut, made in the mid 70's, shows how easily he moved from genre to genre. Here he is with Hatfield & The North. Incidentally JK666, Frank Zappa who would never publicly admit to any musical influences, actually privately admitted to listening to Hatfield. I cannot blame him!

John Marshall. What can you say....one of the most consistent and fluid drummers in progressive rock. Age has not diminished his prowess. His work with The Soft Machine stands as a monument to precussion.

Ok I was not into Zappa at the time, a little too far out for me, but your links make me want to see some more You Tube of him. I did see ex Zappa Jimmy Carl Black live not so long ago - a lovely guy and they did a great set (with The Muffin Men)
The greatest drummer? I am not a musician but I was blown away by Jon Hiseman...He was a league above the rest

My son is watching these videos with me and he says I have to put up Lars Ulrich from Metallica so here he is, naked chest, potty mouth and all the rest:

I would have to say Neil Peart...at the last Rush concert I attended in ABQ, he did an absolutely kick ass 15 minute solo that took your breath away.

f5010: yes, Neil Peart is one of my favorite rock drummers, awesome.
cog: Lars rocks. Tell your son I agree and make him happy.
BB: I would have loved to see Jimmy Carl Black! You have reminded me of the line from Concentration Moon: "I'm Jimmy Carl Black, and I'm the Indian of the group."
MMcD: I didn't realize how talented Sheila E. is on percussion.
