When did the "birthday" ban start?

In the Proclaimers Book it says this which seems to indicate that they stopped celebrating birthdays when they were still called Bible Students which would have been prior to 1931 when Rutherford renamed them "Jehovah's Witnesses."

This is another porky from the WBTS as evidenced by the letter from a faithful Witness in Germany in 1944, and my own experience of faithful Witnesses still celebrating birthdays until 1951.

BTW Doug, from where did you get that quote?

I'd be interested in see what it says at the 6/8/1947 Awake pages 27-8 and the 1942 WT at page 349 two references to birthdays in publications I don't have access to.

    Yesidid,

The quote and a picture of the original letter is on page 126 of an amazing book from Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum. It is in English, and is called "Imprisoned for their Faith: Jehovah's Witnesses in KL Auschwitz", by Teresa Wontor-Cichy (ISBN 83-60210-24-1). (KL translates as "concentration camp".)

The book includes photos of many men and women, it lists the names of people and their fates, and provides pictures of a wide range of documents.

The Nazis kept meticulous records, which in my own case helped me discover the horrible fate of my Jewish grandparents.

Buy the book -- try "googling" the ISBN number. If you fail, get back to me.
