Another closely related question is, If Noah and his family did have immunity, "Where did viral diseases come from?"
Most viruses that infect humans cannot survive for more than a few hours without a living host. Take smallpox for example. Because infected hosts will either overcome the infection or die in about a month's time, the virus becomes extinct without a steady supply of fresh hosts.
Even if someone on the ark was infected with smallpox, a breeding population of 8 could not have produced fresh hosts quickly enough. The virus would have gone extinct ~4000 years ealier than we know it did.
That is a fascinating point regarding smallpox TD.
Do you have a scientific or medical reference to support your claim? I don't doubt that it is true, I am just feeling a little lazy and don't want to take the time to google it myself. If you could save time a specific reference it would be much appreciated.
Cheers
The Oracle
During my entire trip through the Watchtower I never actually believed some of the hard line positions they took regarding Bible stories such as Noahs' Ark. Of course I simply filed my thinking on the topics away believing that it wasn't anything major worth arguing over.
I hate to assume this mantle , but I will don the garment . (ahem , can you hear in the back? ok)
Looking for veracity in a document translated from hearsay and passed through countless hands is like looking for meaning inside grimms bros. work. (sorry to disrespect all bible believers)
The Bible is a group of storys and genealogies. Really is impossible for me to see it in any other light when compared to all the other ancient documents in this world which contain equally compelling material.
It's full of wonderfull messages and horrible punishments, but is impossible for me believe at face value considering the state of human nature.
Why would I believe something because it tells me to and demands that I believe it?
The teachings of it's main character go against that very thing , you know that Jesus guy ?
He said that the love of God is in your heart , as well as the kingdom of heaven ,right?
As much as I can get from the Bible is the sermon on the mount , I think you can toss the rest in the trash and the world would be a better place by far .

The last known "In the wild" case of smallpox was in 1977. With the exception of lab specimens, smallpox is considered extinct today

What about the virus that causes aids? If there is no evolution, then God must have "intelligently designed" it. Is there something wrong with that thought? Couldn't possibly have evolved?
Blueviceroy,
Yes, I think along the same lines. Humans can write fiction now, and they sure could have written it then. How can anyone know for sure much of the Bible is fiction? Look at science. There are just too many Bible events that violate the laws of physics.
It is an interesting point. Breeders of livestock will tell you that two communities of a species isolated from each other for one or two generations will evolve slightly different immune systems. Introduce both sets of animals to the same environment and a few will be dead before long. So integration promotes wider exposure to a wider range of microbes and so immune systems remain more able to cope with small evolutionary changes of the microbes themselves. And I am no expert so will stop here!
Good point, R.ROBINSON.
I wonder some fundy will come up with some explanion
