Are you obligated to forgive someone

......if they DO NOT ASK for forgiveness

......if they show NO REMORSE for the transgression

What is your opinion and how do you uphold it scripturally or philosophically?

Can you really "forgive AND forget"?

Forgivness is a blessing on the one doing the forgiving

Forgivness is for self not for others.

Resentments block vital proccessess and poison the system until it feeds on itself

Forgivness is a medicine and is harmony with life a ,resentment is a tumor of the spirit which drains life energy

Forgivness is for anyone who wishes to be free of pain ,holding that resentment is the sickest form of arrogance and deciet to ones own true nature.

I have to say the word "obligated" complicates this for me. It's for the forgiver, not the one receiving forgiveness. I think blueviceroy has expressed it rather well.

The Heart of the Matter by Don Henley

I got the call today, I didnt wanna hear
But I knew that it would come
An old, true friend of ours was talkin on the phone
    She said youd found someone
And I thought of all the bad luck,
And the struggles we went through
And how I lost me and you lost you
What are these voices outside loves open door
Make us throw off our contentment
    And beg for something more?
Im learning to live without you now
    But I miss you sometimes
The more I know, the less I understand
All the things I thought I knew, Im learning again
Ive been tryin to get down
To the heart of the matter
    But my will gets weak
And my thoughts seem to scatter
But I think its about forgiveness
    Forgiveness
Even if, even if you dont love me anymore
    These times are so uncertain
    Theres a yearning undefined
    And people filled with rage
We all need a little tenderness
How can love survive in such a graceless age?
The trust and self-assurance that lead to happiness
Theyre the very things - we kill I guess
    Pride and competition
    Cannot fill these empty arms
And the work I put between us
You know it doesnt keep me warm
Im learning to live without you now
    But I miss you, baby
And the more I know, the less I understand
All the things I thought Id figured out
    I have to learn again
Ive been trying to get down
To the heart of the matter
    But everything changes
And my friends seem to scatter
But I think its about forgiveness
    Forgiveness
Even if, even if you dont love me anymore
There are people in your life whove come and gone
They let you down you know they hurt your pride
You better put it all behind you baby; life goes on
You keep carryin that anger; itll eat you up inside, baby
Ive been trying to get down
To the heart of the matter
    But my will gets weak
And my thought seem to scatter
But I think its about forgiveness
    Forgiveness
Even if, even if you dont love me
Ive been tryin to get down
To the heart of the matter
Because the flesh will get weak
    And the ashes will scatter
    So Im thinkin about forgiveness
    Forgiveness
Even if, even if you dont love me
    Forgiveness
    Forgiveness - baby
    Forgiveness
    Forgiveness
    Forgiveness
    Forgiveness
Even if, you dont love me anymore

Don't know if you're a Christian or not, but if so, did Jesus list any stipulations when he explained forgiveness in the Sermon on the Mount? And when he prayed to his Father to forgive the ones putting him to death, had he been shown any evidence of remorse on their part?

    Blueviceroy said it nicely

Purps beat me to the song.

Forgive but do not forget lest you make the same mistake all over again, say I.

How do you forgive yourself??? I think that's the hardest one.

  • V1710
    V1710

I grappled with this issue when I was healing from child abuse/abandonement & neglect. As you implied, it would be easy to forgive someone if they said "I'm sorry"

I came to the conclusion that I couldn't forgive, but Christ could and left it at that. Forgiveness is more letting go (for one's own sake) than absolving someone of their sins.

Forgiveness also takes time. Often one has to process other emotions first. No one should be rushed into it. If it's ourselves we need to forgive, it's important to learn to take responsiblity and try to understand why we of did what we did, then forgive and forget.

I guess I think V1710 has something there! Some people are hard to forgive but I hope through my prayers I can forgive others so that God can forgive me! or should we forgive 77 times like Jehovah. But when l try to forget the harm that others has caused I set myself up for more harm. Do not let your guard down or forget! Really that is true! It really is hard to forgive others when they harm or hurt you! That does not mean that people who hurt you, you need to have them around you.

Anyhow, with prayers you can choose to forgive others even though you might not mean it, maybe someday you will! As soon as you make that request although you do not mean it, God will forgive the ones you pray about and you! Remember the old testament, and when you read it there might come a time when you want God to react fast! like do something God, but later God was much more loving then your fast thoughts of wanting him to come to the people's rescue! He is slow to judge but we human are fast to judge!

There is no year or two of being disfellowshipped prior to forgiveness like the Jehovahs Witnesses teach from Paul's Teary letter to his congregations. Foregiveness is an instant thing with God! but humans well we are not so forgiving that is why God sent his son for us all and he will do the final judgement. I would not want Jesus final job of Judgement and Forgiveness! Are we all being tested? Perhaps!
