Just read in one of newspapers that

MOST current plasma television sets would be banned from sale in Australia within a year under onerous mandatory energy requirements recommended in a report commissioned by the Federal Government.

MMM think there is going to be a few angry aussies out here

It found TVs were fast overtaking fridges, heaters and air-conditioners as the major contributor to greenhouse gas emissions from households

Are LCD's much more efficient than plasma?

While LCDs are more efficient than plasma, still have a substantial energy use.

Energy efficiency labelling is suggested (like for other appliances) as well as greener TVs - standby is an issue.

I understand that if the sets meet the standards proposed for the EU, there won't be a real problem - it relates to what is on the market now.

To be exact, LCD TVs are the most efficient currently on the market, being twice as efficient as the CRT models. Plus LCDs do not burn in like CRT and plasma can. There are newer technologies that might be even more efficient. Plasma, on the other hand, uses twice as much energy as regular tube models.

Additionally, the sizes are going up. Time was that a 25" TV was about as big as they got. They did go to 32", but tubes that big were extremely expensive. These days, most TVs start at 25", and go up to 60" and even larger. The 50" sets are now common. And, it goes without saying that a larger set of the same type is going to use more energy to run than a smaller set. Since the measurement is one dimensional, the energy use goes up with the square of the measurement--a 50" set uses 4 times the energy of a 25" set. Combine this with the fact that most plasma sets are in the 40" and up size with 50 and 60" being most common, and you can see why they are such energy hogs.

    That's why I didn't buy a plasma TV!
