  Red and White roses still? Is the white rose sort of a defiant symbol like the "Star & Bars" here in the states, but without the connotations of slavery? IIRC in the Wars of the Roses the Yorkists (white roses) lost to the Lancastrians (red roses). Do they carry any meaning over from the civil war, or are they just symbols of the houses?

  Here's the Nova Scotian( meaning New Scotland) Tartan, the Blue and white stand for the sea, the green for the forests, and the gold for the first Royal Charter

  Above the helmet are two joined hands, one armoured and the other bare, supporting a sprig of laurel for peace, and thistle for Scotland.

  Yep, we still have the roses of York and Lancaster! They really are just symbols of the houses - even during the 'war of the roses', that was all they signified. A lot of the county of Yorkshire actually fought for Lancaster and vice versa - but many people choose to ignore that! The Tudor rose of England is composed of the red and white roses which signified the marriage of Henry VII of Lancaster to Elizabeth of York - whose son was Henry VIII - and the rest, as they say, is history!!
