alias: Guess what Dad? I'm swimming now for exercise!

Dad: Oh yeah, that's great! Where at?

    alias: At the Y.

    Dad: Where?

alias: M I gonna be in trouble for this? CAuse you got a frown forming in your brow...

    Stay tuned.....!

    • Is it true that for religious reasons Jehovah’s Witnesses may not become members of the YMCA (Young Men’s Christian Association)?

Yes, that is so. We have long recognized that the YMCA, though not being a church as such, is definitely aligned with the religious organizations of Christendom in efforts to promote interfaith.

In September 1885 the Watch Tower took this position:

“Alas for the Bible-rearing practiced in the Y. M. C. Associations! They are completely under the control of the sectarians, by whom they are supported. Though professedly non-sectarian, professedly controlled by no creed but the Bible, they are more creed-bound than others, since they are bound by all the popular creeds.”—P. 6.

Now look at 27 years later what Russell himself did:

    *** yb77 p. 37 India ***

An avid reader of The Watch Tower, Joseph learned that Brother Russell, while on a world tour during 1912, would visit India. Madras City was to be visited, so Joseph seized the opportunity to hear Russell and gain a personal interview. At Madras, Brother Russell lectured in the YMCA Hall and, though his schedule was full, he granted Joseph a personal interview lasting two hours.

So, 27 years after the WT first prints that the YMCA is bad (in 1885 as referenced in the QFR from 1979) Russell is giving a lecture in one!

Wow, thanks for that, Gander! One of the questions I asked the man (a former YMCA board member) giving us the tour (and free visitor passes before I joined) was: "Do you have to be a Christian to become a member?" And he said, "No." I know it won't matter to JWs, unless a new QFR makes it a "personal decision." alias

I never saw the big deal with the Y membership. It amazes me how trivial the borg is. Maybe dubs should not eat at Chik-Fil-A since the owner espouses religious views such as not working on the "Sabbath".

You can get yourself cleaned, you can have a good meal,
You can do whatever you feel ...

Young man, are you listening to me?
I said, young man, what do you want to be?
I said, young man, you can make real your dreams.
But you got to know this one thing!

No man does it all by himself.
I said, young man, put your pride on the shelf,
And just go there, to the y.m.c.a.
I'm sure they can help you today.

It's fun to stay at the y-m-c-a.

Okay, so at least two things have changed about this organization:

    1. It's a "family" place now and operates like a park district.

    2. The programming there is "to build healthy spirit, mind, and body for all."

    3. There's no food.

    4. The membership fee is $35 a month to use the workout facility.

    5. I didn't see any dancing police men, construction workers, or priests.
