Back 3 weeks ago I received a very exciting letter that said I was a beneficiary in a life insurance policy, I had to wait until that following monday to call that office to find out the details. In the mean time I was wondering who left it for me, and how much it was. I nearly lost sleep over it. I called my brother and he too received a letter.

Well monday came and I called that office. Apparently my JW grandma (step) left a small life insurance policy in our names. It's not a fortune, but it will help tremendously. She has been dead for over 2 years now. so it came as a surprise to us.

Well 2 weeks have passed and we still have not received any claim paperwork. The woman said they mailed it out on June 11, but said she will go ahead and mail it out again.

She also said we will need certified copies of her death certifcate along with copies of her husband's death certificate (he died last summer).

I have never been through this before, so I dont know how to get these copies, unless I could just call up the courthouse in Florida.

Has anyone dealt with life insurance policies before, and what can I expect?

Also is there a time limit to file a claim? She has been dead a little over 2 years now.

Im just worried that we wont get our money. I wonder why and how this insurance company finally decided to get in touch with us.

I'll be interested to hear your experiences.

RE the death certs; This will be public information. Certs are sent to a state office in the capitol city of every state where the death occured. A fee is involved and the lowest I have heard of is fifteen dollars. You may be able to locate and order the cert by searching the web.

As for the will, my stepmom (JW) had full control of that. They still havent given me the money from my other grandma and she has been dead almost 4 years now.

It should be a lesson to all of us to have our wills in order, I have seen first hand how the JW's do things, isn't by love or who is survived but how strong you are in the truth its sick

    J-Guy,

I don't have any experience with this but you should probably take some type of proof of what you need the death cert. for.

Maybe you could get something in writing from the insurance company.

I had experience with this - the county recorder or clerk or whatever it is called in that county can send you a death certificate - you should be able to go online, find the county, and request the records you need. If no one told the insurance company that your grandmother died, they wouldn't have a way of knowing. They must have found out somehow, then contacted you.

Thanks, yeah it does make me wonder how they found out about it, since she's been dead for over 2 years. Im wondering if my stepmom called them up hoping to fins some money, and then discovered that we were the beneficiaries.

Most county registrars will also have the information for how to request the necessary paperwork. We used to get calls for birth/death certs all the time doing 411.
