Actually it is not Equi -- = Equal - when the day and night are of equal length are not the same as the solstices -when day are night are of completely opposite in duration

Knock: Nope, haven't done that. Was going to try this last spring equinox, but wasn't around. Apparently, IF it's going to work you need to do it at the precise moment of the equinox. Haven't tested it. I will try to do that this autumn equinox and tell you how it goes.
DJK: And a happy Fairy day to ye! Makes sense. Midsummer is notorious for fairy action.
Stilla: Babe, I was kidding. But thanks for the explanation sweety.

BSofM: It works. I used to do that to "amaze my friends" -ok, the pets - with my mystic powers. It can be done for a few hours either side of "the moment" too.

Knockknock: Oh cool! Now I know how to impress my kids . I had been told that you had to do it at the exact moment. This is a good to know. Because I highly doubt I could be Right There at the Exact Time to try this egg trick.
Doesn't it make you wonder Who actually discovered this? I mean, to sit there with an egg on the equinox and see if they can balance it......
Hm intreresting thought!

This is true. During the equinox it is indeed possible to balance an egg on its end. But that's no big deal, it's equally possible at all other times of the year. As you might expect, there is no property of the equinox that makes this feat any easier.
See http://www.snopes.com/science/equinox.asp for the origins of this myth.
