Oh my god I hurt my dog!

I realize with all the human hurt going on here that this may seem insignificant.....

But right now its not for me. I purchased a large dog nail cutter today and was able to clip 38 nails (Two large dogs) with no problem.

Suddenly the last two nails I clipped started spurting blood as if I had cut their throats.

Not a whimper from the dog, but I feel terrible for causing pain, and the trust he has given me.

I dipped the paw into something to disinfect, wrapped it tightly with gauze, and fed him a pill to lower his blood pressure and make him nap.

He still looks at me with adoring eyes.......

I feel so bad......Anyone else experience this?

Gotta watch dark nails to make sure you don't clip into the quick!

    Ouch!

Sounds like you did the right thing afterwards.

Give 'em a treat, they'll be fine!

What it is for some dogs is that the nerves go into the nail and are exposed. It should be fine though (i think).

I know how you feel, i've hurt our dog by accident and i feel terrible because i can't really talk it out or apologise and know it can understand.

There is a powder sold by vets that instantly stops the bleeding. Have it on hand when clipping nails.

My problem lately with our male chihuahua is that he suddenly seems to want to be in physical contact constantly. He follows us around so closly that he gets his paw stepped on frequently. This usually causes a horrible shriek and I have to be peeled off the ceiling.

res*, I'm so sorry. If he didn't make any noise, it likely didn't hurt much (mine yelp if I even get too close to the quick), but I know how awful it is to see them bleeding. Next time you're in the petstore, look for styptic powder, gel or swabs. Those clot the bleeding. I hate clipping my pups' nails. I know some people use a nail grinder (like a sanding wheel on a Dremel) to sand down the nail, especially on dark colored nails. It's been said that the wheel moves so fast that, if it cuts the quick, it automatically cauterizes it. Drs Foster and Smith, online, has those types of tools. ****** Kudos for taking such good care of your furbaby!

Yes, both dogs have black nails, and the former owner for some reason was not great about getting thier nails trimmed. (both have nails at least an inch long and curved down)

You can hear these boys coming down the hall way with a click, click, click any time of day or night.

I know the nails are too long and that has to hurt too.

Sadly, I blew it. I thought I was being careful.

Thanks for letting me know I'm not the only owner who has accidentally hurt my babies.

It happens. It usually looks worse than it is. Just keep an eye on the nail until it starts to grow. Give him lots of love and extra treats.

It's hard on dark colored nails to know where to cut. It happens when we clip our rabbits nails as well. It usually stops bleeding pretty quickly though.
