I think alot of these "things" that people feel they need is fostered by the televangelists that push them. My g/f'nds mother bought her last year for Christmas a prayer shawl. My girlfriend is a very spiritual person (she hates the title "religious"), and really didn't feel the need for something like this.

Her mother on the other hand is a very "religious" person (according to my g/f) and buys all kinds of "things" in her quest to be more "spiritual".

As an outspoken atheist on this forum I frequently make posts that, to me, shine a bright light on some of the absurdity of belief in a god. "Spirituality" is not the sole property of the religious. Neither is "prayer". These are a matter of perspective.

Is questioning someone worshipping them? Or is spying and interrogating them?

    What exactly is worship?

interesting that nuns are still wearing the kind of clothing that everyone wore in the middle ages - then it was necessity, now it is to set them apart. Every time I see a minister with the special collar, or the Americans who convert to Buddhism wearing special clothing - and buying the special beads and pillows and scarves and so on - I think that religion misses its own point - it isn't appearance or appurtenances that make a person holy. In fact, I think the greater the show, the less spiritual the person is likely to be. Even the medium height heels, panty hose and print dresses of JW women (and Mormon and all the other conservative protestant religions)have become a uniform that sets them apart.

I've reconciled myself to the icons and symbols. They've always been there starting with the portable temple (egyptian palm fronds, horned altars). Remember, for most of it's history the large body of Christians were illiterate. This imagery, I am sure, helped them remember the symbolism and concepts of their religion.

When I compare these past temples to the "business rooms" of today, I can't help think we've lost something very important.
