I don’t believe that a previously installed version of linux will boot if certain hardware, like graphic cards, have been changed from a previous configuration (I'm assuming you've just swapped hardrives in to a new machine). You must reinstall a base version of linux, then install the drivers specific for the hardware (e.,g. motherboard) you have. You should be able to go to the nvidia site and download the motherboard drivers for linux.

No, I installed Linux after putting the hard drive in my machine. That's why it boggles my mind.

You’ll need at least 2 gigs of RAM to run vista (1 gig for xp), and probably at least 256 megs of video memory (which is integrated on your mother board).

Not to derail the topic here, but just because a lot of people read this board, I gotta dispute with ya just a little cyberguy.

This may be of interest to people who are considering Vista. Sorry Nosferatu - I don't have any ideas for you at the moment - forgive me for hijacking your thread, btw.

Vista will in fact run with 512MB of RAM. Absolutely. Period. Now, I will confirm that it won't run well (and that is a relative term) without at least a gig, but it will run and let you do the basics. Also, the 256MB video req. you listed is just flat out wrong. 128 is the min. and that will run all flip effects, etc.

I know this because I just did 3 test installs for our school with different configs. Version I have been installing is Vista Business, which has higher reqs. than Vista Basic that Nosferatu said he was using. I was getting very positive and perfectly acceptible useability results with P4 3.2Ghz, 1GB RAM, and 128MB video. Taking out 512MB auto-turned off the Aero interface stuff and slowed the machine, but it still was usable. I was not able to force the Aero effects on for testing with only 512. At that point, physical memory usage jumped to 58% with nothing open and the pc just sitting there, btw. Having IE and Media Player both running took it to 79% used. I will say that while it will run with only 512, I don't feel at all comfortable with the idea of doing much serious multi-tasking with that amount of RAM. It depends on how a person uses their machine though.

I also had zero driver issues, which was not at all what I expected. In fact, it is the first OS that I have installed at the school that didn't need extra drivers for the machines. Network printer setup was brain-dead easy. Literally 3 mouse clicks installs a network printer. Nice. Install time was roughly half of what it is for XP Pro. Considering that our version comes on 5 CDs (not the 1 DVD of regular Vista) as opossed to the 1 CD of XP, I don't know how MS managed to do that, but I like it.

Just thought I would pass that along to anybody who is hearing horror stories about Vista.

FWIW, my impression of the OS is that it is very intuitively laid out. There are many nice touches that I picked up on.

Well, I'm back with an update!

It turns out that my 20G hard drive that I was trying to install ubuntu on was toast. I don't get it because I was using it before I dove into this horrendous task. Ubuntu is now installed on a 6G drive. The 160G drive will make up for that.

Anyway, I decided to try getting the sound to work. I'm getting closer, and the driver I'm downloading SHOULD work.

I've learned quite a bit by formatting the hard drive and doing things the HARD way. First, everyone and their dog is so busy rushing to make drivers for Windows Vista, that they haven't bothered to make drivers for older versions of Windows yet (my onboard ethernet card has this problem). I picked a really bad time to get a new PC, but I didn't have much of a choice.

Second, if I were to get another PC, I will build my own. Trying to find the drivers online is a horrible job, and worse is trying to find out what's built onto the motherboard. I got absolutely no information about this PC, and the best I could do is find specs about it in online stores, and even those don't tell much. More info will probably come out in the next few months

Have you downloaded and installed service pack 4 (sp4)? It's needed for a few of the other installs. S

SP4 is built into my copy of Win2k. The sound works now (YAY!!!). Everything's good except for the ethernet card, but since the onboard sound works now, I don't have to have a sound card. There's only two spots for cards in this PC, and they're both taken up by my TV Tuner card and my Ethernet card.

I'm currently downloading the drivers for Linux, and I'll hopefully get everything working in there next.

You are correct DB, Vista will run but not very well with limited main memory and graphic card memory. I use an xp system for software development, and so my recommendations come from that point of view.
