Have to say that it has to be one of the most offensive expletives IMHO. It saddens me how more and more swear words have become accepted as part of everyday speech.

I wouldn't say that fanny is a swear word in Australia, it is rather a slang word for vagina or vulva, instead of the US definition. However it's not an offensive word. In contrast the C word is generally thought of as offensive,............and yet LT's example of using it in a good natured "slagging" of friends does apply here as well..................we're not too different down under either!

Dee - thanks for the clarification. Maybe it was just the knucklehead jws I was around that got all hot and bothered about it. Though they were the same ones that had no problem using the word b*st*rd all the time. So I just assumed it must be a pretty bad word in the world of Oz.

And a little further across the ditch.........C word is more offensive than F word and Fanny has reference to female genitals not buttocks. We might also say "Stop fannying about!" meaning 'Stop wasting time!'

I'm with LT's take on it.

Our humourous insult du jour is to call each other a "dry c***" but I now realize a "wee dry c***" is even better!

The C word is extremely offensive here in the UK.

Yes the word fanny has two different meanings according to which side of the Atlantic you are. Doesn't "shag" also mean a dance in the US? In the UK (and Australia?) it's a word for copulation: usually of the loveless variety.

If you went up to a female in a nightclub around here and asked her if she fancied a shag, there would likely be an unpleasant scene, possibly even entailing a kick in the nuts.

Clam, you & FF think so, but LT and I don't. Context is everything. I have never used it to insult, other than affectionately.
