Besides almost getting mugged a couple of times. The closest, I came to getting hurt while at Bethel was in the Summer in 1972, at the Allentown PA District Convention. I think its name was "The Divine Endurance"

After one day of spiritual enlightenment, Jim Pipkorn and me went to this college bar for some beers. There were these kids there, that had their whole table top full of these little empty 8 oz. green bottles. They looked, just like little bottles of ginger ale we used to drink as kids.......So after having a few beers myself..I looked over at them......and said......"Hay!......What is 'Rolling Rock'? some kind of soda pop.?"..........These four jocks.....got up and came over to our table and grabed me, they would have bet the shit out of me, if it wasn't for......Jim saying..."He is just a fool and and idiot.......please leave him alone"

The other time was in "Little Italy" I was with Jim Pipkorn again. There was this really big festival going on there, like in the movie "The Godfather II". Jim and me were sitting in this door way watching everything that was happening. I was looking out at the crowd......and said......"These are MY people (because I'm Italian too)........I love all these old 300 lb. women with moustaches!"............just then I felt this liquid running down my head and all over my clothes........You guessed it....It was a big Italian Lady with a moustache, pouring her wine glass out on my head........I never saw anyone laugh harder then Jim at that moment.....It was me sticking my foot in my month once again.

There was another Jim, I meet at Bethel, but I never saw him laugh ever. It was Jim Olson.......I meet him on my frieght elevator in Factory building # 1 in 1973......He was this sad, shy looking boy, he had blond hair, blue eyes about 5' 7" he looked like he was only about 16 years olds. He was from Kendallville, Indiana and was good friends with "AK Jeff" who posts here on JWD, they had studied together. He was cleaning toilets in the factory. Believe it or not, that is considered a "good job" in the home and factory, because you weren't "on production" or on one of those damned machines....and no one was on your ass. No overseer to beg to go to the bathroom, but it was a very lonely job, ther were few people to talk to, all day..........I probably saw him more then anyone and I didn't have much to say to him either.......when you were there for a few years, you just didn't have much to say to the "new boys.".........they hadn't got it yet.

He got on my elevator one day with tears in his eyes........."whats up".. I asked. You could tell, he didn't want to tell me, but he did.... he said ........that he couldn't take it anymore at Bethel......and about a week earlier he went home back to Indiana (AWOL), without telling anyone. He told his folks he wanted to come back home for good. His folks had a fit........and told him he had to go back and "make his time".........and do the "right thing"...........He told me he had just left Max Larsons office, Max had just tolded him what a disappointment he was, to his family and to"the organization!".....So what encouragement did I give.... this poor kid?......Basically NOTHING!........ I told him ...... "Hay........Screw them........just do your time......then go home and enjoy the rest of your life.".........I told him basically the same thing that guy tolded me, my first day at bethel, which was also his last day........"Do your job and keep your month shut..........They don't give a shit about you here!"

That was October 31, 1973.......I remember that night, beacause it was Halloween. I was working on my car in the in the garage at the 117 Adams St. building, it was about 9:00 p.m.You could use the garage to work on your car back then, I was changing the oil in the old fairlane......when all of a sudden all Hell broke loose. All of the fire alarms went off in Building 4.......The watchmen were running around, trying to find who broke in.....they looked everywhere, but could find nothing..........Very strange.

November 3, about 12:50 p.m. I'm taking everyone back to work after lunch, on elevator. Everyone is standinfg on the sky bridges, looking out, at the back of building 4. There is an ambulance there, taking the stiff dead body of some blond hair kid out from behind the bushes and beer cans...........it was 19 year old....... Jimmy Olson!......I was standing next to Norm Brecky (ink room overseer) and Tom Combs (Job Press overseer).......Tom Combs said and I quote "He must have done something REALLY BAD to have killed himself!"...........then Norm said and I Quote....."I glad he jumped of the BACK of the building and not the front of the building.........because WE don't need the extra publicity"......Jimmy was..Dead and judged on that day.

So my friends......Just who did kill James Olson?....Was it the heartless religion?......... Was it his family?.......Was it the "Brothers" at Bethel? ..........Was it Max Larson?...............I'm the only person who knows who really killed James Olson! ...............................IT WAS ALL OF US.............It was the religion, his family, the people in oversight, the bethel family.........and ME......None of us gave a shit, about 19 year old James Olson...................We all pushed him off the building that night as far as I'm concerned.

P.S.......They did KEEP his body.......its buried in some unmarked grave, upstate New York "AK JEFF" told me.

P.S.S......Many years ago a friend of mine sent Max Larson a post card on October 31.....It said. Do you ever think about James Olson?..............Hay what the heck......we ALL have a resurrection HOPE don't we, anyway?.....................

An orgnazation of love would have let him GO.

    How utterly tragic.

Enjoyed your series the past couple of weeks. This story was too, too sad.

    So young.

How terribly sad. Do you know what happened to his family after that? IIn your other postings, you mentioned his brother later went to bethel, did he stay long?

    I quit!

Very sad. It is too bad his family didn't hear his crys for help. I would like to know if they are still dubs. I'm glad you're making this known. It might help save some poor kid from going to that horrible place. I wish every JW would read your story.

These accounts are what nightmares are made of - that is so sad. I'm glad that Randy is posting these at Freeminds - Bethel Chronicles. This information needs to get out there.

Thanks for sharing when it is painful to recall.

Jimmie's story speaks volumes about the "Spiritual Paradise" that not only exists in abundance in 80,000 congregations around the world, but ESPECIALLY exists where Jehovah's Holy Spirit is drawn to that vortext of spirituality created by HIS chosen ONES just across the Brooklyn Bridge from Manhattan.

Life in Bethel is Hell-On-Earth unless you are one of the elite. The Watchtower yoke is not kindly, nor is it light. That yoke either breaks people, makes them evil, lobotomizes them, or kills them.

What a waste of youth and vitality...shame he never got the love and attention he needed in "God's House." I'm sure the irony was lost on all of them.

Hey, at least you gave him a hearing ear, and didn't judge him. It's too bad he didn't come back to talk about it more later, like the next day.

Poor kid. I wonder if the overseer threatened to kick him out and he felt like he was on borrowed time there, and had no support at home.

Newboy, I remember that day too. I had just arrived at Bethel on September 25, 1973 and was still very brand new.

I remember coming back from lunch that day and as I entered building 3 I could hear the code bell ring for Max Larson. His was two single rings. The lobby watchman in building 3 looked quite upset. I believe he was the one trying to reach Larson. It didn't take long for the news to spread through the bindery. The guy who was training me on the card cutter didn't want to believe it was suicide. But, I'd heard enough from friends I had at Bethel already that the stress could be overpowering. My recollection is that the body was found between building 4 and the Manhattan Bridge which runs right behind it so that would explain why he wasn't found until Monday.

I heard they buried him at Watchtower Farms. As you mentioned earlier, when you enter Bethel you sign over a permission slip for them to dispose of your body. I still remember the chill as I signed that slip. Thanks for sharing your memories.

    To "Confusa" and "I Quit"

I don't if his family are still "in" or not.......But "AK JEFF" might know, he is from their home town. Jeff told me yesterday that they sent their other son to Bethel a year after Jimmy died.
