Why is it that a priest, practicing their 'freedom of religion' can be jailed when someone dies during a botched exorcism, yet the Watchtower Society faces no jail time when someone dies from refusing a blood transfusion? I realize this is in another country, but what happens in North America if someone dies during an exorcism? Is the priest put in prison? If so, I think this is a double standard.....far more Witnesses die from refusing a blood transfusion, than die during an exorcism.

    This is on CNN:

    Priest jailed for exorcism death

    POSTED: 1759 GMT (0159 HKT), February 19, 2007

Adjust font size: BUCHAREST, Romania (AP) -- A Romanian priest was sentenced to 14 years in prison Monday for causing the death of a nun during an exorcism ritual. Four nuns were also sentenced in connection with her death.

The nun, Maricica Irina Cornici, believed she heard the devil talking to her. She was treated for schizophrenia, but when she relapsed, Daniel Petru Corogeanu -- a monk who served as the priest for the secluded Holy Trinity convent in northeast Romania -- and the four other nuns tried exorcism.

Cornici, 23, was tied up for several days without food or water and chained to a cross. She died of dehydration, exhaustion and suffocation.

The court in the northeast city of Vaslui convicted Corogeanu and the nuns of holding Cornici captive, resulting in her death. One of the nuns, Nicoleta Arcalianu, was sentenced to eight years in prison, and the other three -- Adina Cepraga, Elena Otel and Simona Bardanas -- received five-year sentences.

Dozens of Corogeanu's supporters packed the courtroom and prayed for the priest, with several bursting into tears when the verdict was announced.

The defendants' lawyers plan to appeal, saying the sentences were too harsh.

Cornici's death stunned Romania and prompted the Orthodox Church to promise reforms, including psychological tests for those seeking to enter monasteries.

The church, which has benefited from a religious revival in recent years, condemned the ritual as "abominable" and banned Corogeanu from the priesthood and excommunicated the four nuns from the church.

While Orthodox churches regularly perform exorcism rituals, Corogeanu's methods were seen as excessively harsh. Church officials noted he had dropped out halfway from the church's religion school. Despite leaving the program, he was anointed as a priest because of a shortage of priests to serve in new convents and monasteries.

They should give him life. Or firing squad.

They should be ashamed of themselves. He is guilty of at least manslaughter in my book. He should be jailed for life.

Religion is just an evil old superstition. Cases such as this go to prove it!

It sounds like the Middle Ages with its ruthless ways of doing things. I am not surprised that he got time in prison since they starved that woman to death. The dubs often operate in a similarly ruthless mode at the emotional level.

I think the reason that it doesn't happen, is that the botchtower was born into legal maneuverings since the time of it's first lawyer leader, Judge Brotherford. They have a following of zealots, who are totally in step with every insane pronouncement that issues forth, and have been surrounding themselves with a team of lawyers at the top ever since. Imagine the Roman Catholic hierachy, as a team of legal beagles. They could pull a lot more shit, if they all went to law school an imbeded ther legal structure into the fabric of society.

I agree. But when you consider all those that die every year due to the GB's ban on blood, why are the higher ups at Brooklyn Bethel not being charged with murder? In both cases, each group claims they're doing it for their religious beliefs. One group goes to prison, the other group goes merrily on their way. It makes me wonder why the government isn't doing something about this.
