I saw the movie "Malcolm X" recently, didn't he convert to Islam? I won't say he was 'non-violent', but the movie made him out to be pretty powerful and a good leader to the Black people in that point in history.

He was originally a part of the Black Muslim movement founded by Elijah Muhammed. After taking a pilgrimage to Mecca he changed his stance on gaining rights by "any means neccessary" and hating the "white devil". In Mecca he had white Muslims washin his feet and feedin him. He found out that White folks were alright and were also Muslims, adherents to Islam.
