proplog2: You need to liberate yourself from ALL magical thinking.

So we can be as upbeat and inspiring as you? Seriously, if everyone in the world could have exactly your perspective at the push of a button, would you push it? If not, shut up about what people NEED to do.

    Hi Auldsoul,
nicely said, in a bubbly volatile sort of way lol.

i honestly dont understand why people who dont belive in God visit the forum, or witnesses.

I wouldnt visit an atheist/ witness website etc , the only time i say anything to them is if they try to force their views on me.

    All the very best

    AuldSoul:

There is no "magical button". Nothing fails like prayer. Pray in one hand and crap in the other. See which one gets filled.

    Ade,

If you ask anything in my name, I will do it

Although it is a side issue to your topic, you may be interested in knowing that several manuscripts read "If you ask me anything in my name, I will do it" -- a variant which many believe to be original, including the famous Westcott & Hort edition of the Greek NT which the NWT is supposed to be based on...

    Perry,

And they stoned Stephen as he was calling on God and saying, "Lord Jesus, receive my spirit."

"God" is not in the text -- no object is expressed to the verb (epikaleô). I don't know what version you are quoting, but it shows that the NWT has no monopoly on over/mis-translation...

Honestly? Unbelieving xJWs don't qualify as xJWs?

    Hi Narkissos,
i also find it interesting to cover the variant texts, i normally use a NKJV thompson chain reference for that particular reason - as the variants are listed below the text.its one of the many bibles i use, i tend not to use the NWT at all now, As i just recall where i have read differences in the text of that bible compared with others, obviously many translations render words differently. I feel however the NWT oversteps the mark in many areas of translation, and the cross references are in a world of their own and obscure at best.

    All the best

While they were stoning him, Stephen prayed, "Lord Jesus, receive my spirit."

I think either way will do. If he was praying, then it was to his God. Generally prayers are directed toward the superhuman object of devotion of the devotee....his God. It seems to me that some of the translators thought that only the last bit of his prayer was recorded above, in the midst of his general prayer to God.

    Leolaia

    From the NWT:

"Therefore, that I might not feel overly exalted, there was given to me a thorn in the flesh, an angel of Satan, to keep slapping me, that I might not be overly exalted. In this behalfI three times entreated the Lord that it might depart from me; and yet he said to me: 'My undeserved kindness is sufficient for you; for my power is being made perfect in weakness.' Most gladly, therefore, will I rather boast as respects my weaknesses, that the power of the Christ may like a tent remain over me" (2 Corinthians 12:7-9).

Here Paul is describing himself as praying directly to Christ, with Christ answering his prayer. Christ also tells him that his own power is what would remain with Paul.

    Perry,

Epikaleô (middle voice epikaloumai) per se doesn't mean "to pray". It is indeed part of one usual self-designation of early Christians in Acts and Paul ("those who call upon the name of the Lord", whence the NASB rendering). As such it may include prayer but it is actually broader than that; what it really means is appealing to an authority. For instance, when Paul appeals to Caesar (epikaloumai Kaisara, 25:11f etc.), he is not praying Caesar, is he?

    Leolaia,

Lol, good find. I never thought of this passage from this perspective (although parakaleô is not restricted to prayer in NT Greek either).

My prayers are answered. He has given me miracles. My prayer time connects me to my Maker and is the sweetest part of my day.

I pray, talk to God the Father, God the Holy Spirit, and God the Son. There was never a time that we were told we were not allowed to talk to Jesus

    It is a personal thing.
