A friend of ours sent us this old scan of a newspaper clipping. He thinks the date was 1927 or 1929, he could not make out the exact date or name of the paper due to damage. We thought that it was interesting. It reads as follows: "Raze Brooklyn Home Of Famous Preacher, Bible Society to Occupy Site Where Lincoln Is Said to Have Visited Henry Ward Beecher." "The three-story and attic brown-stone structure at 124 Columbia Heights, Brooklyn, in which Henry Ward Beecher, the famous pastor of Plymouth Church, lived for almost half a century, is in the course of demolition. Wreckers started yesterday to pull down the historic building to make way for a nine-story structure to house the activities of the International Bible Students' Association and the Watch Tower Bible and Tract Society, formerly headed by the late Charles Taze Russell, and now headed by Joseph H. Rutherford. The buildings at 122 and 124 Columbia Heights, formerly occupied as residents, are also being wrecked for the same purpose. According to Mrs. William C. Beecher, wife of Colonel William C. Beecher, son of Henry Ward Beecher, who lives at the Hotel Margaret, a short distance from the old structure the famous preacher occupied the building now being razed until 1881. Mr. Beecher died in 1887. It was in this house that President Lincoln is said to have visited Mr. Beecher shortly before the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation. While Mrs. Beecher said yesterday that she had no personal knowledge of the visit of Lincoln to the great preacher, she had been told by Samuel Scoville Jr. a grandson of Henry Ward Beecher, that Mrs. Beecher, the wife of the preacher, told him while they were on a trip in the West that President Lincoln did make the visit, and that it was late at night and was done very quietly."
