"that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain - that this nation under God, shall have a new breath of freedom - and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth". A. Lincoln, Gettysburg, Nov, 1863

Somehow these words are still appropriate...

You are right. The Gettysburg Address is still one of the world's greatest speaches ever given. I wonder if Lincoln knew how great his words would be historically.

"Hand me that whiskey, I need to consult the spirit."-J.F. Rutherford

I feel how weak and fruitless must be any word of mine which should attempt to beguile you from the grief of a loss so overwhelming. But I cannot refrain from tendering you the consolation that may be found in the thanks of the Republic they died to save.

I pray that our Heavenly Father may assuage the anguish of your bereavement, and leave you only the cherished memory of the loved and lost, and the solemn pride that must be yours to have laid so costly a sacrifice upon the altar of freedom.

    Yours, very sincerely and respectfully,

    A. Lincoln

As I watched the interview of the wives of the men who evidently successfully averted United Flt 93 from hitting its intended target, I was reminded of this letter now made famous from "Saving Private Ryan." The last words his family heard from one of these men were, "Jesus help us, let's roll." Those men demonstrated what being an American is all about. They were strangers thrown together in a desperate situation. Their actions will no doubt become legendary in our country's history.
