Venus Fly Trap creationist thread...

I just saw a "Gardening by the Yard" on HGTV (a home-improvement channel we have here in Texas). It was all about carnivorous plants. One thing which struck me was the potting instructions - just plant them in a non-nourishing sand or vermiculite which can hold moisture. They actually need to grab insects for their nutrient system to work right...

This caused me to think - did God make them that way? It poses a dilemna for JW-type creationism:

    * - if he did make them that way, it certainly lays waste to the idea that all creation was vegetarian in the garden. Hardly seems fair, eh?

    * - if he did not make them that way, are you saying they evolved those particular features? Now, don't tell me Satan had the power to develop the clawlike leaf pairs, the pitcher & its dissolving fluids, the sticky fly-catching hairs, etc...

Similar points could me made for the life cycle of the mosquito, the jaws of the crocodilians, or the fangs of poisonous serpents...if it was Satan's hand, he must have been pretty busy (and well after the original creation!)

Wonder what other types of apology the intelligent creationist troll-like creaturs could come up with for this?

This is EXACTLY the explanation a JW or other such creationist would give you. In their minds, it makes perfect sense.

It's a good question, and one that I'll remember. It could be answered, one would think, fairly easily from an evolutionist viewpoint, but for a creationist who believes absoulutely in the Genesis account it wouldn't be so easy.

I'd be very interested in how the jw apologists who come on this board would answer it. I imagine though that as Kid-A says, they would probably take the easy way out from their perspective and blame satan.

OK, so then in the "new system", does Jehovah have to "de-evolve" Satan's toxic creations?

For example, your Bengal tiger kitty-cat will then come without claws, snakes will re-grow legs, the lamprey eel will no longer suck fish guts, and so on?

I was kind of hoping for a more "Catholic" explanation - like "the Divine Balance of all things great and small" or something related -

Doesn't the Bible also present plants as being created before "flying creatures", presumably including insects? So until the big J got around to creating flies, I wonder what his Venus Bug-To-Be-Named-Later Trap was supposed to eat?

    Interesting thread!

Quick thinking Almost Atheist! That was a good point on the biblical chronology of creation. And yes, this is an interesting thread. Though I wouldn't put it above the creationists to stomp in here, bark an explanation and expect us to nod our heads to it.
