In India having a daughter is a big economic liability due to the need to provide a dowry for her future husband. Better have sons to receive dowries.
So, many parents abort or kill their infant daughters and as a result there aren't enough women for all the men to marry with.
Some married men try to cash in on this by hiring their wives to such unwillingly celibate men at $180 per month, a lot of money by Indian standards.

China has a simular problem with a shortage of females. Rent a wife, wouldn't that be prostituting their wives to do that? Being a submissive wife in that culture would certainly be bad for her. But if she played her card right she could have the pick of many man rather than an arranged marriage.

Indian women are beautiful and exotic. I forgot to say that there are 80 women to go round among 100 men, that's the way it is at least in some parts of India.
We can see how killing so many females creates a lot of social upheaval.
