I hate this Damn Computer.....

Compac Presario - the Walmart version [which I think is cheapened up to get volume]. First the CD-RW went out - so after days of screwing around with techs in India on the phone and finding that getting a repair under warranty is just a little less painful than Lethal Injection - I decided to just buy an external drive-writer.

Now - I turn my computer on and the damned monitor blinks and goes blank. It had done a couple of funny things last nite - but today it just died. So I have an old monitor hooked up for the time being. I hesitate to try and get any warranty work done on it after my last experience. Rather than send a new part they expect you to give then a credit card number -and if you don't return the old one within so many days they charge you. In the meantime who might have my CC number floating about in cyberspace? What a pain in the ass.

I am thinking of just buying a new monitor and forgetting the warranty.

I've never actually bought a new computer. Just kept upgrading the original one I built. Yep bits occasionally break down and I have to replace them but very rarely.

    Hi Jeff.

My daughter when a teen worked at Walmart. She said to NEVER buy any electronics from them as the guys who stack the stuff in the back drop so much of it and don't care. Then it goes out on the floor.

Sorry to hear about your experience, but I've heard others complain about their electronic purchases at WallyWorld w/the same problems.

CD drive went bad now the monitor? did you get a spike? Did any other electronics go out or are acting strange?

Ontop of replacing your PC make sure you get a nice surge supressor if you don't have one

I have been lucky with the two copmuters I have had, the first for seven years and the second and current one for two, they never had any problems with their hardware except that I had to change the mouse twice on the first one.

They were assembled by small companies using good quality parts.

No spikes that I know of - I have a SP on the system. The CD-RW did not go entirely out - just wont read certain things - will play audio and some data cd's - just won't read certain games etc, irratic in making copies at times - so I think it is a badly installed or defective part in the laser perhaps.

The Walmart stockers could be to blame - that kinda makes sense. I work in a division of Walmart - at a distributin center - any damage done to merchandise ends up on your record - and it can end your job in a hurry - so that kinda makes sense - what is in a box cannot be found to be damamged, so just put it on the shelf. I know the orderfillers in the warehouses are under a lot of pressure to move a lot of material too - so it could have happened in that way too.

Anyway - I am just fed up with this computer. I will prob just buy a new one and forget it. Can anyone point me in the right direction for transfering my files to a new computer? What is the easiest way to do that?

It is not so much that I hate the computer, but the software stuff drives me nuts. Also the trying to figure out why I cannot simply drag and drop stuff that gets me. I tried to post a pic on the "post your pic" thread, but instead it made it my avatar. So I gave up. I don't find computers fun and am always amazed by people who do.

Have you recently played any SONY CDs in your machine?

SONY has an agressive "digital rights management" program that automatically installs WITHOUT asking your permission.
