Sorry...call me thick, if you like...where does anything there mention Associate status as a requirement to speak at OSCE conferences? Or anywhere on the OSCE Web site?

It seems there is an attempt to build a circumstantial case for a relationship that factually never existed. The extent of their involvement with this group consisted of regsitering to speak at two conferences regarding freedom of religion in various nations, not an Associate status.

I'm not sure why you emphasized the regional nature of the body or the fact that it was recognized under Chapter VII of the UN Charter. The fact that they speak before a body that has been recognized by the UN does not make them an Associate of either that recognized body or of the UN.

(http://www.osce.gov/archive/misc/info.htm) The OSCE works closely with other international organizations and regional security institutions, including the United Nations, the European Union, NATO and the Council of Europe. The OSCE distinguishes itself from other institutions as it promotes a broad understanding of collective security by seeking consensus-based agreements, which reflect the political will of its participating States. The OSCE works together with the other organizations, both at a political level and on-the-ground through the Organization's 17 field presences. It has co-operated closely with them on counter-terrorism, border security, excess munitions disposal, civil emergency planning, combating intolerance, promoting free and fair elections, as well as conflict prevention and resolution.

And it is in this capacity as a transboundary agency for combatting intolerance that the WTS sees itself as morally right to address them in conference. Doing so does not conflict with their published dogma.

I will write an email tomorrow to find out, but I could find nowhere on their Web site that explains any attachment to it as being available for an NGO.

    Respectfully,
    AuldSoul

"The phrase 'non-governmental organization' came into use with the establishment of the United Nations in 1945 with provisions in Article 71 of Chapter 10 of the United Nations Charter [1] for a consultative role for organizations that neither are governments nor member states – see Consultative Status. The definition of 'international NGO' (INGO) is first given in resolution 288 (X) of ECOSOC on February 27, 1950: it is defined as 'any international organisation that is not founded by an international treaty'. The vital role of NGOs and other "major groups" in sustainable development was recognized in Chapter 27 [2] of Agenda 21, leading to revised arrangements for consultative relationship between the United Nations and non-governmental organizations." [3]

"Globalization during the 20th century gave rise to the importance of NGOs. Many problems could not be solved within a nation. International treaties and international organizations such as the World Trade Organization were perceived as being too centered on the interests of capitalist enterprises. In an attempt to counterbalance this trend, NGOs have developed to emphasize humanitarian issues, developmental aid and sustainable development. A prominent example of this is the World Social Forum which is a rival convention to the World Economic Forum held annually in January in Davos, Switzerland. The fifth World Social Forum in Porto Alegre, Brazil, in January 2005 was attended by representatives from more than 1,000 NGOs."

" The Watchtower was never an Associate of the UN, nor were they the
"UN's NGO." The UN Department of Public Information is not the UN.
    The
Watchtower Society was never a part of the UN,
nor did they join the UN.
Any such statements are easily deniable and easily disprovable and will
weaken anything else you have to say to an active JW."

The Watchtower Society's affiliation with the DPI put it in direct association with one of the United Nation's major organs, the Secretariat. How is it possible that one can be part of a "major organ" of the body without actually being a "part" of the body ? http://www.un.org/aboutun/chart.html
