Is there anyone in heaven who cares?

JGnat, thank you! You are right, I should find many signs of God in the things around me every day. I am alive, and the sun came up, and a beautiful day it is, snow on the mountains and bright sunshine. I stand corrected and appreciate the reminder. I guess we'll all find out when our days are over, how we did! Meanwhile, we try our best. But, here I go again...can't we have a sequel to the Bible for our times, lol?

Sure, no problem! The Mormons did it. Or maybe it's here:

    there is no heaven

but the interactions we have with other people affect them and ourselves.

so, doing good to others, naturally helps them and helps your self esteem.

It's easy to say G-d cares ,if you have not been in trouble. Now ,if you asked that question " does G-d care?" of the survivors of Hitler's concentration camps, I think the answer would be a big 'NO". Millions died with no help from G-d.

    peace,

    Moshe

But when you give alms, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your alms may be done in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you.
And whenever you pray, do not be like the hypocrites; for they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners, so that they may be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward. But whenever you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you.

I personally don't believe in anyone who "sees" nor in future "reward". But I like the idea of connecting "God" with "secret," seeing what nobody sees (in an even strictest sense from an atheist pow). Especially as Matthew uses it in a positive way, "seeing the secret good," not "the secret bad". Secret kindness is subjectively most meaningful because there is no one (perhaps not even God) to know.

    Welcome Virgochik.

Moshe, I think it is a little unfair to speak of the survivors' faith. As if we would know. I do know that some found meaning and humanity even in those horrific and demeaning circumstances.

These days I have a more practical view.

The golden rule is still a good guide for a successful life.
