I'm told this was just a brief comment in the "Watching the World" section of the magazine. If that's the case, I think I've got the full quote (ajwrb has it on their site).

Hemophilia
Treatment Hazard·
Certain clotting "factors" derived from blood are now in wide use for the treatment of hemophilia, a disorder causing uncontrollable bleeding. However, those given this treatment face another deadly hazard: the Swiss medical weekly Schweizer Med Wochenschrift reports that almost 40 percent of 113 hemophiliacs studied had cases of hepatitis. "All these patients had received whole blood, plasma, or blood derivatives containing [the factors]," notes the report. Of course, true Christians do not use this potentially dangerous treatment, heeding the Bible’s command to ‘abstain from blood.’—Acts 15:20, 28, 29.
I knew a guy in my cong who suffered from Hemophilia. He went through such terrible times. When he was in hospital (which was often) not many went to visit. Me and my friend tried to and he developed attachments to us. He told us about the extent of the pain he suffered. Eventually he became addicted to pescription pain killers and was put into a rehab clinic. You should have heard the loving congregation gossiping about him. These same people who wouldn't visit him in hospital or greet him at the kingdom hall all condemned him for not having enough faith in Jehovah etc. Naturally it was all his fault. Shame on them.
B----ds. The pain hemophiliacs suffer is due to constant spontaneous bleeding into their joints, which is excrutiating. Thankfully that is not something I've ever had. Hemophiliacs used to end up in wheelchairs because the bleeds deformed their joints. Now that Factor VIII has been available, they are free to enjoy a higher level of activity. Did the guy end up surviving? God, so what if he got addicted to pain killers, as if that is not understandable. Talk about empathy!
Do you remember if the guy ever got transfusions? I'm told Crisis of Conscience discusses a scandal. I just ordered the book so I can read about it. I'm told the WTS printed that article and there was chaos as a result, because it pretty much sentenced hemophiliacs to disability and death. I'm also told COC says the WTS took to calling individual hemophiliac JWs and told them it was ok to get factor transfusions. This was allegedly done to spare them the embarassment of retracting the rule in writing! The problem with that is they did not have a list of affected people. So people like me who were not informed of the retraction continued to have serious problems and die because they were following what was printed.
Now factor transfusions are A-ok. This has got to be one of the most reprehensible things they have ever done. There is not an emoticon strong enough to truly express how I feel about this. I learned all of this yesterday and was literally fighting back vomit.
