"...Likely you have noted that Jehovah's Witnesses try to maintain exemplary conduct and show love for one another. But you may feel that they should be more concerned about the problems people are facing now-hunger, sickness, poverty and the like. You may feel that they should undertake extensive charity drives. Jehovah’s Witnesses do not solicit money and other material things from people and then take credit for the good deeds such contributions make possible. As was true of Jesus Christ, their main concern is to give spiritual aid to all whom they possibly can. . . While material giving may bring temporary relief, spiritual spiritual giving can aid people to enjoy the… permanent solution to man’s problems that only God's kingdom provide. (Aw, April 8, 1975, p 18).."
While the WTS may not be out and out against "charity", they certainly do not encourage any Witness to give to anyone outside the Organization (with the exception of a potential convert). The support no hospitals, soup kitchens, or anything "charitable". Their pathetic excuse is that "only God's Kingdom can put an end to all our problems." While that might be true, they should still be contributing to charities as that's a basic principle of being a Christian. Jesus fed the hungry, helped the sick and dying and cured lepers. We are told to take care of the widows and orphans and the fatherless boy. How many Witnesses do any of the above on a regular basis? Very, very few.
I've heard conflicting stories of what happened on September 11th.....I heard that they opened their doors, helped those that had been injured or in shock, gave them coffee, blankets, and sandwiches, etc. I also heard that when they saw thousands of people running across the bridge, they quickly closed their doors and locked them. I'd really hate to believe that even they could be so heartless as to do this, but given their past reputation, this is probably what really happened.
