I was chatting with my wife last night and the subject of disaster relief came up. She made the claim that the dubs do a lot to help others even non witnesses in the time of need. My position was that they only helped dubs and maybe book studies but could care less about those not in the"truth" There was even something about Rwanda lately that made the claim that they helped over 7 thousand persons some non witnesses.

I would like to refute her claims but a google seach of the site showed very little.Any help or quotes from their mags would be appreciated.

Very simple. Have her write the WTS asking for an audit of the money spent for Katrina and Rita.

I guarantee you she will not see any accounting of money... if anything she will get an ugly letter or even a visit from the elders wanting to know why she would ask such a thing.

In the summer of 1994, a team of Witness volunteers from Europe rushed to help their Christian brothers and sisters in Africa. Well-organized camps and field hospitals were set up for the Rwandan refugees. Huge quantities of clothing, blankets, food, and Bible literature were flown in or shipped to them by other means. More than 7,000 afflicted persons—nearly three times the number of Jehovah’s Witnesses in Rwanda at the time—benefited from the relief effort.

In order to do this, the WTS had to cooperate with the UN in its NGO capacity and could not reject non-JW people. But notice that they rushed to find JWs first and this number could easily include JWs and the people they studied with and their immediate families and easily reach 7,000.

1993, Rwanda, with 2,080 Kingdom publishers, had 4,075 attend the "Divine Teaching" District Convention, and 230 were baptized. Of these, 142 immediately applied for auxiliary pioneer service. Home Bible studies being conducted climbed to 7,655 in 1994

Not surprisingly, these circumstances have resulted in a fine witness. Observers have been touched by the fact that our Rwandan brothers received such help and support from fellow Witnesses, and it has been possible to share this help with others.

The Christian activity of Jehovah’s Witnesses was also prospering in Rwanda. Earlier this year over 2,600 Witnesses were engaged in carrying the good news of God’s Kingdom to the country’s predominantly Catholic population of about eight million. (Matthew 24:14) In March the Witnesses were conducting more than 10,000 Bible studies in the homes of the people. And there were 15 congregations in and around Kigali.

    Thanks Blondie,

I liked this quote. It gives you the impression that is was"worldly people" they helped but the truth was the extra numbers were made up from book studies, back calls and the unbaptized ones. You really have to read between the lines to figure things out. They are a sneaky bunch.

Yes, they are sneaky, Poznate. I do my review partly to illustrate how they sneak.

However, we have reason for caution. We could miss the lessons that are implicit in Malachi 2:1-9. Are we personally alert, so that no unrighteousness is found on our lips? For example, can our family members really trust what we say? Can our spiritual brothers and sisters in the congregation do the same? It would be easy to develop the habit of couching one’s words in terms that are technically accurate but misleading. Or one might exaggerate or hide details in a business matter. Would Jehovah not see that? And if we followed such practices, would he accept sacrifices of praise from our lips?

    Here's a good link.......www.jehovahs-witness.com/6/98996/1.ashx

"...Likely you have noted that Jehovah's Witnesses try to maintain exemplary conduct and show love for one another. But you may feel that they should be more concerned about the problems people are facing now-hunger, sickness, poverty and the like. You may feel that they should undertake extensive charity drives. Jehovah’s Witnesses do not solicit money and other material things from people and then take credit for the good deeds such contributions make possible. As was true of Jesus Christ, their main concern is to give spiritual aid to all whom they possibly can. . . While material giving may bring temporary relief, spiritual spiritual giving can aid people to enjoy the… permanent solution to man’s problems that only God's kingdom provide. (Aw, April 8, 1975, p 18).."

While the WTS may not be out and out against "charity", they certainly do not encourage any Witness to give to anyone outside the Organization (with the exception of a potential convert). The support no hospitals, soup kitchens, or anything "charitable". Their pathetic excuse is that "only God's Kingdom can put an end to all our problems." While that might be true, they should still be contributing to charities as that's a basic principle of being a Christian. Jesus fed the hungry, helped the sick and dying and cured lepers. We are told to take care of the widows and orphans and the fatherless boy. How many Witnesses do any of the above on a regular basis? Very, very few.

I've heard conflicting stories of what happened on September 11th.....I heard that they opened their doors, helped those that had been injured or in shock, gave them coffee, blankets, and sandwiches, etc. I also heard that when they saw thousands of people running across the bridge, they quickly closed their doors and locked them. I'd really hate to believe that even they could be so heartless as to do this, but given their past reputation, this is probably what really happened.

Sometimes, their sneakiness, lying and deceit just makes me want to hang my head in shame that I was ever part of such an unloving organization.

Poztate, I asked a few times if anyone knew what the WTBTS spent, not local JWs, but the WTBTS spend on disaster relief which they claim to do in their NOV 1st Watchtower and as yet NO ONE has an answer.
