What are good books or other sources of information pointing out how to overcome the aftereffects of a JW upbringing?

Um, well I don't know you can get over it with reading material. I've been trying to get over it 15 years and that's what brought me here to JWD. I think it takes talking about it. Only after I started posting here was I able to talk to people face to face about it.

    It takes time.

A comparable experience may be children who mature prematurely as a defence against their upbringing. Children of alcoholics may have the same types of issues. See if a book like this might help.

Under74: Reading "how to overcome" is of course another thing than actually doing it: optimal living after an upbringing in the Borg.

jgnat: That is indeed a book to consider. Thank you.

Check_Your_Premises/All: I want to learn for myself. I think i could learn in enjoying life and taking responsabilities without suffering. I was in from age 3 till 16/1974. I think i tend to seriousity and the role of victim. But i also think i underestimate myself and my capabilities.

Lady Lee: Wow! That is a huge and complete list. Now i dare you: Which 3 books do you recommend? And which book do you consider the most complete on the issue?

Which 3 books do you recommend?

Narrowing it down to 3 best is hard. It would depend on what the person needs.

For a look into how the WTB&TS is run and controlled:

    Crisis of Conscience (3rd Ed.)

    Franz, R.

For recovery of the effects on a person's mind after being a JW:

    Captive Hearts, Captive Minds

    Tobias, M.L., & Lalich, J.

    Combatting Cult Mind Control

    Hassan, S.

    Releasing the Bonds:

    Hassan, S.

And which book do you consider the most complete on the issue?

Again this depends on what you need and why. Of the last three probably Releasing the Bonds by Hassan.

What I find interesting about the books that I chose is that none of them are specific to JWs except for Crisis of Conscience. The information in all of the books would help anyone recognize unhealthy relationships anywhere regardless of whether the person was considering another religious group or other association.

Two other books I have written about that you might find helpful are:

    Toxic Parents

    Forward, S. & Buck, C.

    Subtle Power of Spiritual Abuse

    Johnson, D. & VanVonderen, J.

You might find the discussions of them helpful
