Damn, many jws claim that Lord Of The Rings is "demonic" "satanic" "promotes spiritualism" and that fairies, goblins, trolls and other fantasy creatures are Satan's minions and that we should not read/watch etc anything like that. However, elves and the rest are NOT REAL and the stories are fictional. Can't a JW read a sci-fi or fantasy book?Pffff

They say the same about Harry Potter. One of the first things I did when I exited was buy the HP movies. I already had the Lord of the Rings Trilogy.

XPeterX- Can't a JW read a sci-fi or fantasy book?Pffff You can read anything you like, as long as you don't tell anyone.

I was told by a jw that Lord of the Rings was okay because humans did not practice magic but that HP was bad because humans did....

    Can they??

It all depends on the J W in question.. My dubby immediate family loved the L O R films but thought Harry Potter was bad for kids......go figure?

The Watchtower never comment on individual films

This thread surprises me a bit. When I was a teen JW, I and most of my friends were big fans of LOTR, and nobody in the congregation had a problem with it (unlike some of the other things we liked, e.g. rock music).

Me and a friend went and saw Fellowship of the Ring on opening night when I was in bethel. I'm sure we would've been busted if they found out.

When I was 13 I read LOTR and didn't think there was a problem with it. Heck, I even wrote in Elvish script while bored out of my head during the district conventions.

As soon as it got popular, they came out and told servants and elders that they'd be removed for watching any of the LOTR movies.

Considering that much of our Western popular culture is framed upon the Bible stories like Aaron's magic staff, Jesus walking through walls and going invisible, and dragons, it would be a bit odd to condemn this kind of imaginative story telling.
