Conversation with a non JW about JWs

A nonJW friend asked me about my past with the JWs today. He knows that I have basically quit. I tried to explain how I came to see that they weren't the "true religion" but it was hard to do without telling him about what the JWs believe. I sure didn't want to get into that. I told him how they expected the generation of 1914 to not die and before I could explain that they changed what "generation" meant he said, "Aren't they already dead?" I agreed with him and said that the JWs use the scripture about the light getting brighter and how that means new teachings or doctrine changes are "new light" and he said, "That's just a cop out". He asked how the date 1914 was attained. I won't even go into that suffice it to say he figured out it's a crock of $#!*. He asked about the hours spent knocking on doors to people converted ratio. He couldn't grasp the idea of using door to door work if it was not successful. I tried to explain the control aspect of it. He asked about how much money the religion has and what they did with it. I told him millions but I had no idea where it went.

It was interesting to see a completely free thinking person's reaction to these beliefs and practices. We were on the same wavelength about the WTS being a money-making machine, but it took me most of my life to realize I was being duped and he saw through it immediately. Mind control is a very real thing.

I tried to explain to some friends (who know I was a JW) what going out in service, every Saturday, was like.

Initially, they thought my mom, whom they met, was a loon; after the door-to-door explaination and all the meetings, no worldly friends, armageddon in 1975, etc., they were looking at me like I was a nut-job.

The look of fascinated disbelief/disgust is one I will have in the back of my mind for a long time. I don't know if I will tell anyone about it again.

They started asking so many questions then, it was frightening. They finally understood that the JWs are not just nice friendly preachers. They are a high-control group and I was lucky to get out.

Then again, the look, could be them figuring out why I am the way I am. Either way, unless someone askes, I am now on a *don't tell unless asked* regime.

    hey undercover and teenyuck!

those reactions are GOOD! they are positive validation that you are now where you need to be! It proves that other humans would make the same decision to leave! look at the positive side. dont be afraid to tell--the more people you tell, the less new ones will get sucked in! and someday the rest of the world will just get sick and tired of all these dangerous whacked out cults and make them illegal.

    Good job Undercover!

Did you count your time? I hope you're going to make a return visit and hopefully a bible un-study. Remember, when we find fertile soil we need to dig through it and pull out all those seeds that may be planted there.

It would be interesting if we started keeping track of the "informal [un]witnessing" that so many of us do. I bet the success rate is a lot higher than that of the Empire.

A young lady I work with saw me reading the posts from this website and asked if I was a jehovahs witness. I told her I was bought up as one but have since left. She explained that her neighbours were witnesses and she has recently started accepting their magazines. Later during lunch I made a point of seeking her out. I asked her if she was serious about the Dubs. She didnt know, but said they seemed such nice friendly people, and their children are so well behaved. I gave her a very brief overview of the history of dubdom which interested and worried her. I showed her a few of the posts on this site (the last being m0nk3ys life story). I gave her a few leading questions to ask the dubs when they next return. (I tried to keep the questions as innocent as possible, only using well know references such as the blood issue, Birthdays, paedophile protections etc ) I'm hoping they'll smell a rat and leave her alone, but whatever happens, she's lucky enough to have been shown both side of the coin. Its her choice now.

If things get interesting, I'll post the whole story.
