I have this video and give it my wholehearted endorsement.

It is the story of the Worldwide Church of God which was started by a man named Herbert Armstrong, who had the same self-aggrandizing disease shared by Russel-Rutheford-Knorr-Franz....

The church began to reform after his death (which was not supposed to happen because he was "Elijah" returned in the end times to "set things right" before Christ's return) The video is the story of that reformation.

I am sure they still have some problems. This isn't an endorsement of the WCG. This video will simply offer some amazing parallels to the JW story, yet it is completely safe to show to a dub because it is criticizing another sect. The parallels are amazing. A legalistic religion based on the idea that one man is God's representative, that they are the one true church, and they are preaching the good news of the "World of tomorrow".

One thing I have found lacking in general on ex-jw sites is that there is not any info on other cults, that can be used to show how cults behave in a safe setting (un-critical of jw)

Just to give a little tip on how to present this info.

I sent out a letter to all the local churches and cults. I asked several questions about various doctrines that I actually cared about, doctrines that are JW staples, and some general questions about the divinely appointed authority a church can claim over it's members and of it's exegesis.

Many churches responded with pamphlets and pap, likely figuring I was a kook.

    A few "got it".

The response from wcg was absolutely made to order. The guy I heard from completely grasped the risks of men claiming the authority of God. I asked him to send me a hardcopy of his response to my house with the above video.

If I present it to her, her guard will likely be up.

    On the other hand....

If it comes in the mail, she will open it and read it.

Most of this de-programming stuff I think is just getting their guard down.

They also put out Plain Truth magazine. They sent me a couple copies and it is all about anti-cult type stuff, but I saw no mention of specific churches. Smart. Anyway, their website offers a free 1-year subscription. Price is right and can be left in the bathroom.

I figure this isn't a thread that many will reply to...

...so I think it is ok to shamelessly btt.

As an ex-Seventh Day Adventist, of which the WWCoG is an offshoot, I am impressed by this story I first read about in a Ray Franz book. My mother used to read The Plain Truth. I was impressed with their public apology for years of false teaching:

    Forgive us our trespasses

The Worldwide Church of God, sponsor of the Plain Truth magazine, has changed its position on numerous long-held beliefs and practices during the past few years.

…we are acutely aware of the heavy legacy of our past.

Our flawed doctrinal understanding clouded the plain gospel of Jesus Christ and led to a variety of wrong conclusions and unscriptural practices. We have much to repent of and apologise for.

We were judgemental and self righteous – condemning other Christians, calling them “so-called Christians” and labelling them “deceived” and “instruments of Satan”.

We imposed on our members a works-oriented approach to Christian living. We required adherence to burdensome regulations of the Old Testament code. We exercised a strongly legalistic approach to church government.

Our former Old Covenant approach fostered attitudes of exclusivism and superiority rather than the new covenant teaching of brotherhood and unity.

We overemphasized predictive prophecy and prophetic speculation, minimising the true gospel of salvation through Jesus Christ.

These teachings and practices are a source of supreme regret. We are painfully mindful of the heartache and suffering that has resulted from them.

We’ve been wrong. There was never an intent to mislead anyone. We were so focused on what we thought we were doing for God that we didn’t recognize the spiritual path we were on. Intended or not, that path was not the Biblical one.

As we look back, we ask ourselves how we could have been so wrong. Our hearts go out to all whom our teachings have misled in the Scriptures. We don’t minimise your spiritual disorientation and confusion. We earnestly desire your understanding and forgiveness.

We make no attempt to cover up the doctrinal and scriptural errors of our past. It is not our intention to merely paper over the cracks. We are looking our history squarely in the face and confronting the faults and sins we find. They will always remain a part of our history, serving as a perpetual reminder of the dangers of legalism.

Thanks CYP. I've just ordered the video, which I just might be able to use with my JW friends to look at (via their son whom they think is interested in JWs).

Thanks for hinting I take a look, CYP. Where was it buried? Eleven pages back in Active Topics?

Yes, I have mentioned the parallels with the WWCG a bunch of times. The difference with them is that they had courageous leadership who were willing to take the cut to their membership. By going mainstream, they are a fraction of their former size, and took a major cut to their funding base.

I believe there is a radical offshoot staying "true" to the original founder's teachings.

There are ex-members who will never forgive.

Pretty much what you can expect from a religious meltdown. I wonder if there is anybody as courageous in the Watchtower leadership today?

P.S. C_Y_P, I am most impressed with your systematic approach to deconversion. If your process works, put a copyright on it (after you send me a free copy).

    J,

did you check out my presentation advice I mentioned above. It is one of my "little tricks" that I came up with. Like you I don't mention my best stuff here anymore. I mostly just keep it to myself and MJ. Afraid of being made.

This dvd is absolutely made to order. You may have discussed things, but a dvd is such an efficient medium. There is no way you could have communicated with the power of this dvd.
