I just got the news a little while ago. Kristi, the MS patient I've been taking care of went to the ER this morning with a perforated colon and peritonitis....her BP was waaaay down and the docs have her in surgery right now, but they've told her parents it doesn't look good for Kristi to make it thru this.

I was with her yesterday. She had started the morning throwing up and her Mom was there because Kristi was impacted and she was trying to remedy the situation. Later that morning Kristi took her temp and it was 102....and she had a lot of pain in her abdomen, but we just figured it was because of needing to "go".....Kristi was thinking about going to the ER yesterday, but she's so very tired of going to the hospital and having to stay for weeks at a time that she's very reluctant to go now and will always wait till things get desperate before she'll allow herself to be taken there.

When they took her to the ER this morning, it was discovered that she has a perforated colon and they're doing emergency surgery.

I can't tell yall how sad this makes me. She has so much to live for and means so much to so many people.

I'm sorry to hear that Frannie. Has she been having trouble with her bowl for long and if so why didn't they do a colostomy?

No, cher. Kristi was diagnosed with MS about 10 yrs ago...then they discovered that she also has CIDP, which mimics MS, progresses faster but is treatable....then this past summer, just after they began treating her for the CIDP and making some good progress, Kristi was diagnosed with cervical cancer, for which she was treated with radiation and chemotherapy, and was cured....problem was the radiation rotted her bowels, which is probably why she's been so swollen with her abdomen distended. She's been fighting off three different infections and her blood count keeps dropping too low, causing her to need repeated transfusions.

The docs only told her parents this news after the surgery which she's just come through (YAY!) and they have just now done a colostomy on her, but the infection is so bad that they're gonna hafta do another cleanup on her abdomen for the peritonitis debris, if she makes it thru the next few days.

The docs only discovered the problem with her bowels this afternoon during surgery. The nurses told her Mom that when they cut into Kristi, it was like letting the air out of a tire, because she was so bloated.

Thanks for your concern, Wild Horses.

I posted a request for encouragement and flower pics for Kristi a while back and got many kind responses from JWD posters, for which both Kristi, her hubby and parents were very appreciative.

Thank you, Shotgun....I'll let her know JWD posters are pulling for her.

    How old is she?

Dirt Rocker, she's only 36. She's simply beautiful and looks like Julia Roberts with all that wild curly brown hair, big brown eyes and a terrific flashy smile.

I find myself asking that if there is a God.....then save her.

That's horrible! Does she have any kids? That would be even worse... How do people get MS? Is it in your genes?

No, Dirt Rocker, and the cervical cancer has ruled that out permanently.

There's a lot of controversy over the cause of MS. It used to be thought that MS is an auto-immune disease.....here's an excerpt from a news item about some of the controversy....

"A group of scientists have provoked controversy by suggesting that the medical world is wrong about what causes multiple sclerosis.

It has long been thought MS is the result of immune system cells attacking and destroying the myelin protein which sheaths nerves, and helps them transmit signals.

However, New Scientist magazine reports that this view has been challenged by three neurologists.

They argue that MS is caused when support cells called astrocytes malfunction - perhaps as a result of genetic and environmental triggers.

Peter Behan and Abhijit Chaudhuri, at the University of Glasgow, and Bart Roep, of the Leiden University Medical Centre, say the autoimmune theory of MS is based on inaccurate conclusions drawn from animal experiments carried out in some cases in the 19th century."

Frannie, I hope she will be ok. She is in my thoughts and prayers.

Lately, I'm hearing more and more that the environment is the cause of serious illnesses.
