Watchtower teaches obese people are less perfect?

In the news a lot lately, are thoughts on how magazines are to blame for young woman dieting to the point of death. Not because they are not beautiful, but because they see these thin woman on the covers and think that is the image they need to be. What is funny about image though, is depending on the time period in history, you would see a wide variety of images of beauty. In the 1800's woman with large hips were considered the best wife's, while thin woman would have been considered at deaths door.

So as I thought about image tonight, as mentioned in my other post. I thought about something, does the society teach that obese people are not perfect? Well at first you might say, "no, never heard of it." Yet, did you see it?

Picture yourself back then, when you were a Witness. You were looking through one of the many magazines and books they published and come to a picture of the paradise earth. Look at the people, did any of them have a weight problem? Did any of them have large hips, or a chunkier appearance? No, they were all the same "teen magazine" image of the magazines we see today. Why is this wrong?

Well keep in mind that the society was saying these images were of "perfection." Yet doctors say that weight is not always a indicator of someone's health. In fact, in many cases a little extra weight is healthy. Being to thin can harm your organs, cause birthing problems for mothers, and even affect the development of your body. Contrary to believe, the thin image shown in these pictures as perfect, is not really the perfect body. How can these images affect people though?

Well lets say you are a young woman in a congregation with a weight problem. You look at these magazines each day and see these beautiful people. You see that the "popular" boys and girls in the congregation look like this, while you do not. You then see the pictures from the society more, and soon you start to feel that in the new system your body would need more work then others, because lets face it. According to the societies depiction, you are further from perfection then most. So with that in mind, how do you think that would make someone feel?

Personally, I could see issues with self esteem. I could see issues with depression and even the development of the same eating disorders that the news reports in teens today that want to be as thin as the latest super model. At the same time, as much as we would want to think that only Witnesses make this mistake in showing a godly perfect world as being thin people. I must also mention, that I have never seen a obese angel in any other churches either.

So I wonder something as I write this, did anyone else ever notice this one little fact about the perfect world? If so, how did it make you feel? If you didn't, does it make you wonder more now how it affected your own image of a perfect body?

    Just wondering

I noticed the photos of real-life people posing in those "field service" and "meetings" photos were always those of thin, healthy-looking people. Never did you see an overweight father or mother, sister, brother or even a bible study.

Yet if you look at the average congregation, more than half of the attendees are at least 20lbs overweight.

    Kenpo,

You are stuck on fat today!! LOL See what I mean in your post to Kelsey007's thread. Too funny. Anyway, I do see the point about perfection=thin in the world. I never did take note of that before though. Good point but I can hear a dub saying that no one would be fat because they wouldn't be comfortable or some other mumbo jumbo! (pun unintended)

Anyway, I was always struck by the depictions of the WT's Jesus. His hair.......it always looked sort of feather- cut and styled with a blow dryer. That is what bugged me........because my hair is long and thick and CURLY. I always wanted straight hair. LOL I didn't know that 2000 yrs. ago they had mouse or electricity. Even if they did, it seems highly unlikely to me that Jesus had much time for primping while teaching the gospel. Dj

I think it is because I have been in Lammas (sp) classes all weekend, and hearing woman saying they felt ugly because they were fat and pregnant. I hate self defeating statements! In all though, the classes were long and boring and gave my brain to much time to think.

I never noticed but I think that perhaps the drawings of the people in the paradise earth are not overweight because gluttony is a sin. Your post made me think of a time when an Obese elder gave a talk and he read from the scriptures about gluttons..... it confused me at the time why overeaters weren't DF'd or disiplined or even talked to but yet one could be disiplined or DF'd for indulging in drinking to the point of getting drunk but not being an alcoholic. You know what I mean? If its also a sin why is there no emphasis on it other than drawing thin people in paradise. jurs

Obese does not always equal gluttony though. My sister-in-law hardly ever eats, yet gains weight. While my wife's friend eats like it is going out of style and gains nothing. Bodies are all different.

I would like to add though, that I do agree with your point. How can you DF for smoking and not for over eating, when both can harm your heath and shorten your life?

    Poor Kenpo,

Lamaaz (sp?) is what got me through childbirth twice! I thought that it was stupid during the classes. I only went twice. I was so glad that my husband was with me in delivery. It is frightening and excruciating. I can honestly share with you that your presence in the room, holding your wife's hand and reminding her to BREATHE is of the utmost importance. I guess it just gets your mind off of the pain for a split second. Also, when a person is in that kind of intense pain, I think that we tend to want to hold our breath. That is counterproductive. You may feel bored at the classes but it will be helpful. Your wife may yell at you or the doctors during labor. Just keep in mind that she is in the most unfreekinbelievable pain that one can experience. She just needs to TRY to stay calm by reassurance and you can help to do that by focusing and refocusing her mind back to the breathing. It's brutal but she is counting on you in her heart.

My husband actually wept after both our babies were born. I've never seen him cry before or since those times. They are tears of joy. This is the most joyful experience of your life. Trust me on this. I am happy for the two of you. Enjoy this little gift. God Bless. ((((hugs to both or 3 of you))))) Dj

I will probably cry too!!! Joyful moments have that kind of affect. We did the crash course in one weekend, it was two very long days. I think that is what did me in. My wife and I are very close, and were are looking forward to birth. (Well, I am!!! She does not want to dwell on the pain). I see a lot of benefit in the breathing, but I had to laugh a couple of times when I went ....

    "Heeee Heeee Heeee Whooo"

... and realized what I probably looked like. Fortunately I was not the only one.

Take Care, and thanks for the advice!

My poor wifey poo has put on a great deal. Yes.....it makes her VERY mad that only thin looking women ...'get the time of day'

I saw a program with a hidden camera of a buisness doing some hiring. The job was for a woman. When the cute thin girls were interviewed....the response from the male interviewer was completely different than it was with the overweight girls. Needless to say, a thin cutie got the job.

This is another type of predjudice...and sad for those overweight.

When I visited, I only remembered thin people too. Do you think the society feels obese people are less spiritual?

    Never know
