INCREDIBLE claims require HUGE proofs: the story of JW's 1914 mythos

Members of the religious group, Jehovah's Witnesses, have a bond of TRUST with the men who run the organization.

The SOURCE of authority for that bond of Trust is explained to be superior to any other and all other religious groups.

What is the basis given for the superiority of the Governing Body's teachings and interpretations of God's will?

    Just this: a mysterious understanding.

    The claim is :heavenly direction.

All religious groups claim to have an understanding leading to TRUTH.

Variously it has been the following:

Pre-Moses: people did what was right in their own eyes and suffered the consequences for bad choices or reaped the benefits of good ones.

Jews, under Moses, accepted they had been selected among all Earthlings to become "special": a chosen nation for special rewards.

The source was Moses' claims that God, the True and Only real God, had contacted him (unseen by the others).

The LAW was the concrete symbol of a Divine source of "special" relationship and Truth.

IF Jews performed their end of the bargain (obeyed the Law) God protected and advanced them.

IF Jews failed to perform (broke God's perfect Law) God gave them to their just desserts.

Non-Jewish nations pursued philosophies, military conquests and meditations.

Alexander the Great trumped every other methodology by winning battles against all Gods, gurus and philosophies.

Every personal God of conquered nations was struck dumb by Alexander's victories over them.

The GREEK way of thinking, acting, believing and governing practically wiped away competing views of what worked.

A retelling of Jewish history was necessary to answer this threat to Jewish identity. Miraculous retellings were given to "prove" the Jews were special to this tribal God.

Sophisticated and educated Greeks refused to believe these reworked myths as superior to their own tales of Zeus, Athena and heroic Greek demi-gods.

The Jews lost interest (practically speaking) in their Law, Hebrew language, world view after Alexander and his generals divided up the empire.

A hardcore group of fanatical intransigents clung desperately to the Old Ways. The majority of Jewish subjects under Greek and Roman rule, became citizens of the World at large rather than a name-brand people of a tribal religion. They lost their ability to speak or read Hebrew.

JEWISH IDENTITY in the crucible of a sacrfice-based religious ritual kept Judaism from the brink of the abyss.

Meaning what? JEWS deeply desired the "promise" of being above all other groups. They wanted Top Dog identity. Only a Messiah leader could achieve that for them.

Post Alexander, Judaism was a patch on the Old Ways. It was splintered into interest groups. Three main splits: hardcore sacrific/priesthood, (Pharisee) political identity zealots(Sicarii), Roman quisling political/religious figureheads(Herodians).

When Jesus came along his groups was a gnat on an Elephant's back as far as Judaism and Roman rule. He seemed a candidate for Messiah as a Military/Religious leader until he was killed.

Jesus, like the three splinters of Judaism, claimed a SOURCE AUTHORITY for his TRUTH. He was a failure as the Great Messianic Hope of zealot Jews.

Opinions abounded about who or what Jesus might have been. These opinions became stories and legends with various claims made.

Paul, the self-styled "Apostle", made a claim for a transformed Judaism in the shadow of Jesus' ministry. Jews were no longer physical Jews; they were "spiritual" styled "Jews". For Paul's theory--Jesus was an invisible leader about to return in divine glory to set matters straight.

Christianity was deeply fractured over the actual personhood of Jesus as a Christ. Was he human? Was he divine? Christianity split into factions, sects, heresies and two main churches: ORTHODOX and CATHOLIC.

The church (Catholic) claimed a source of power from Peter himself as bestowed by Jesus.

The melding of political power (under Constantine) and a hierarchy of priests and popes ruled Christianity through FORCE until Martin Luther.

Martin Luther made an astonishing claim:

1.The visible Catholic Church was so demonstrably corrupt, it could not possibly represent Christ's Kingdom on Earth.

2.Each individual Christian could---with the scriptures alone (Sola Scriptura) be guided by Holy Spirit to TRUTH.

From the 16th century onward, people "guided" by scripture alone came to astonishly varied and contradictory "guided" conclusions about what constituted TRUTH!

The Reformation was a testing of SOURCE ATHORITY in the practical everyday world.

In the 19th century, Puritan theories of self-perfection (by pure standards of behavior) had been disproved.

An End-Times theory took over, fueld by William Miller's predictions of Christ's Second Advent.

When this failed, splinter groups formed to "explain" away the test of their SOURCE AUTHORITY and failures in predictions.

Charles Taze Russell was one among many who gave as his SOURCE the tricky understanding of INVISIBLE RETURN.

When WWI broke out--it temporarily seemed to VALIDATE Russell's theology.

After Russell's death, his successor, Judge Rutherford sought to piggy-back off of Russell's following and authority.

The source of Rutherford's TRUTH, at first, was C.T.Russell's writings!

Eventually, Rutherford repudiated most things and changed them.

HERE IS THE IMPORTANT PART. READ CAREFULLY....

The only proof of C.T.Russell's divine connection to Jehovah was the break out of WWI.

Every other thing Russell predicted was proved wrong in the most absolute sense.

Rutherford sought to prop up the failures by INTERPRETING literal events against a backdrop of scriptural "shadow plays" unveiled with himself and the governing body as players in a grand prophesy fulfilled!

Today, the Watchtower Society's sole SOURCE OF AUTHORITY is the trumped-up explanation for 1914 (maintaining Russell's link) and 1918, (bolstering Rutherford's role).

Without 1914 and 1918--THERE IS NO SOURCE OF AUTHORITY for men in Brooklyn pretending to "know" anything Jehovah says.

Destroy that foudation and you unlink the POWER SOURCE from the old men changing their minds all the time.

The bedrock of Witness claims to divine direction (keep that word uppermost in your mind: DIRECTION) is the 1914 "invisible" return of Jesus followed by Jesus "choosing" his servants in 1918 (Rutherford).

IF Jesus did NOT return in 1914, he did not choose Rutheford or the Watchtower Society.

This means they are just another misguided group of self-deluded liars!

All of Christian and Jewish history has been a tug of war between power brokers who wanted to rule others with claims of superior power sources.

JW's have the most easily demonstrated and refutable claims.

It all begins and ends with the unfeasible claim of invisible Jesus in 1914.

Doctrine was one thing, I didn't much care for growing up, until my father explained to me the 1914 prophecy. It was that explanation, that was the glue that held everything together for me. I needed something that proved we were different and we were right. It justified going to the meetings and obeyeing the rules. Authority indeed, and it made me veiw it's relevators as having authority as well.

I was able to explain this 1914 crap as early as grade 7. I was awestruck by how all these numbers came from this ancient book and was able to have relevance to our day. This date was the sole reason for my convictions, obedience and subservience. It was a great trick to play on a little kids impressionable mind.

An impressionable and uninquizitive mind is exactly what power brokers need. Imagine if a guy like Chriss angel was around even 200 years ago walking on water or making things disappear. He would be considered a God with great authority. It is because he is skillfully directing what people see, just as the the watchtower skillfully directs, what goes into peoples heads.

As kids we all want to beleive in magic and fairytales. At least the magicians and the authors of tales don't claim to have special powers. Those that buy 1914 without questioning it, are buying into a class act of deception. Once you buy into it, you might as well accept that they got it from God.

Always read the magicians handbook. When I was young, I remember always going to the back of the second school to look at the old library we had in our hall. We even had some of Russels books. I always found it strange, that the brothers would direct me away from these books. I don't think such a library exists anymore.

Beleif is a very powerful thing and without special knowledge or a skeptical mind, you might as well beleive that Chris Angel can walk on water, just like the folks that belive Jesus did!

Nobody can deny that 1914 was a special year in history. They got that right, but the way they got it was a completely unbeleivable accident. Wrong calculations, right date. Very lucky. I totally agree with your premise Terry. It amazes me that Rutherford completely changed the magicians handbook with the exception of that date. The handbook can always be rewritten and a fresh new act can always come along, so long as the 1914 remains a constant, and the end times are always within reach.

It should be interesting to see what would happen if the GB abolished that date what would happen. The rank and file should have known by 1918, 1925, 1975 etc. that there is no Santa Claus.

It would also be interesting, if Russel would have been way off ,on the only date he ever got right. Would he have been written out of watchtower history? Would Fat ass Rutherford have given it a shot? If he did, and got his 1925 wrong, without a sucessful precedent, would he have been impeached so to speak?

If Miller had gotten his date of 1844 correct, would he have developed the hubris of Russel and Rutherford, as well as the obedient following? I say probably. People need something to beleive that is a higher authority than man. If a man correctly predicts what God has hidden, then he has God's power.

1914 was like winning the lottery, yet there are other folks who made far greater predictions in Rutherfords day, that were 10 times more accurate, consistantly, like Edgar Casey. He was popular, but didn't get the devotion that the fat ass did. Nor did he seek profit from his readings. I think this is because there were no claims of biblical authority and therfore no source of divinty, and yet he was accurate, infinately more, than anyone before or since.

I guess what the average JW misses entirely is the specific surrounding statements made by C.T.Russell concerning 1914 which were far, far wrong and disproven.

    1. 1914 was claimed as the FINAL stroke of God's judgement. Nothing but Judgement and reward was to follow.

    2. The "adjustments" made in follow-up Watchtower articles re-worked, revised, edited and changed what was PREVIOUSLY said to CERTAIN. The unequivocal certainty was fudged, hedged, ignored and photo-shopped (if you'll pardon the anachronism) into fitting real world events.

    3. Pastor Russell played catch-up as events played out adjusting on the fly. Death caught up with him.

4.The FINISHED MYSTERY was published by Rutherford and misrepresented as RUSSELL'S work and final word on the meaning of Revelation's application to the End Times in which Rutherford's contemporaries were then living.

    5. Rutherford had the hubris to interpret bible prophecy specifically to himself, the other Governing Body members and Russell himself. When Russell became a liability and to distance himself from the zealous Russellite opposers to his leadership, Judge Rutherford scrapped everything and renamed the religion JEHOVAH'S WITNESSES. As a lawyer and judge he liked the idea of setting the meaning of his own religion as a courtroom drama in which his own followers gave testimony as sworn witnesses before the Judge Christ Jesus.

The Watchtower and its Governing Body always RE-interprets actual events in its history to conform to whatever convenient explanations portray them in the best light possible.

Only JW's (and Ex-JW's) who are my age (61) or older remember that the Society interpreted everything in the forties and fifties as Greater Fulfillments and Lesser Fulfillments of scripture.

Every assembly, proclamation and activity that Brooklyn's mindset could imagine became a literal interpretation of Bible prophecy.

All this has been swept under the rug now.

It vanished from sight, never to be seen again.

It is like today's JW is living under a completely different religion and theory than people of my generation and older.

    Some food for thought!

The amount of beurocratic WT speak designed to enthuse masses and be accountable to noone other than themsleves at thousands of conventions worldwide is prostituted spirituality!

If it were divine, any convention could be re-broadcast and it would be applicable - but as we saw of the 1975 fiasco they lied their asses to heaven and now lie it ever happened!

And even they spout of about the original liar who deceived woman!

And they deceive millions but claim divine holiness!

    Make your own mind up!

I'm currently of the considered opinion that facts are only important at the beginning.

    The beginning of what?

Almost everything we are considering being associated with.

Like dogs sniffing other dogs' puckers, we silly humans pause to catch a whiff before we proceed to screw with (or be screwed with) strange new enterprises.

We vet our prospective mates only at the beginning of the relationship. We vet our religion (only if we are making a shift) with quasi-skeptical questions until our guard is dropped altogether.

The PROOF portion of our sifting and weighing and analysis comes at the start. After that, sadly, we seem to make a transition in our own mind to DEFENDING what what chosen no-matter-what happens.

I wish I could find the name of the study that was made about what people do what are exposed to a sudden attack on their belief system. In this study(I'll search for it and see if I can find it) any blow to confidence in one's invested beliefs is immediately followed by a strong reaction. Unexpectedly, that reaction is not disbelief or even skeptical reconsideration. Astonishingly, it is a redoubling of one's CONFIDENCE!

    This is troubling.

If we only defend and never reconsider anew--what chance is there for us to change from shaky, ill-proved beliefs to something more substantial?

    Not much.

    Sigh....

When you have that argument with you parents or former friends at the Kingdom Hall and you dump all your refutations about the Society on them and all your rebuttals about the Governing Body---all you really accomplish is to make them dig down deeper into their entrenched mentality!!

They have to hit bottom on their own with some personal experience that smacks them upside their own head!

That is why--counter-intuitively, being disfellowshipped can only result in a temporary window of escape for your belief system to reconsider, weigh, parse, examine and come to NEW conclusions.

If you don't do that---you'll crawl back on your belly and reattach the chains to your own ankle.

    Gasp!

    How very sad, indeed.
