The Dollar is Heading for Collapse

The U.S. government is living beyond its means.

    • The government spends $1.3 billion per day over what it takes in.
    • The U.S. debt grew 9.5% last year, surpassing $9 trillion in October — about $30,000 for every man, woman and child in the country.
    • U.S. government liabilities, including net social insurance commitments, now total $50 trillion.

In order to bridge the gap, the Federal Reserve prints more money, making each dollar less valuable.

    • The dollar is no longer tied to the gold standard, so it is easy to create more dollars when spending exceeds income.
    • "The U.S. government has a technology called a printing press — or, today, its electronic equivalent — that allows the Federal Reserve to produce as many U.S. dollars as it wishes at essentially no cost." — Ben Bernanke, Chairman, Federal Reserve System
    • The total number of dollars grew 10% in the last year to $11 trillion.
    • As of October 2007 the amount of money is growing at an annualized rate of 12.8%.

The purchasing power of the dollar is falling at an accelerating rate.

    • A pound of ground beef costs 28% more now than three years ago.
    • A gallon of gas is up 69% over the same period.
    • Health insurance premiums have risen 48% in those three years.
    • The dollar is hitting new lows against foreign currencies.

Yes. Yes. Yes. 1913 and all that. It is a travesty, but no need to be all wild eyed about it.

yawn. millions of people have been starving to death for decades. The US idea probably peaked in the 90s under Clinton. We might have made it if we had kept on the track of reducing the deficit. Bush's reaction to 9/11 (hey, how can me and my buddies benefit from this) moved the US in a different direction. McCain will get elected, the rich will get richer, the poor poorer. All you can do is live one day at a time. Be grateful for what you have. If you are a Baby Boomer be extremely thankful for you have lived in the most prosperous time in human history, 1950 to 2000. Joel's predictions: The dollar will continue to sink until the trade deficit is eliminated. Millions more US jobs will disappear, please practice birth control. Global warming will cause problems in the 3rd world, but not so much elsewhere. We will find an alternative to oil within a decade. The general standard of living in the US will diminish over time and become equivalent with poorer European countries. The United States will merge with Mexico and Canada to become a supercontinental nation by the year 2100.

I sold most of my equities months ago. This will pass like all others. BurnTheShips is right - it's mismanagement at the federal reserve level. People who think they are smart enough to outsmart the economy. It doesn't work and it never had.

Buy commodities, euros, bonds. Sell covered calls. I can make a decent 10-20% return in a flat and declining market. It will hit bottom - probably later this year. Then buy like crazy.
